Cashews come from a tree that produces cashew apples, within the fruit is a single seed. What appears on the tree to be the fruit of the cashew tree is an oval to pear-shaped accessory fruit or false fruit that develops from the receptacle of the cashew flower.
The nuts are harvested from the fruit. This is a precarious chore because the liquid around the nut is toxic and often leaves one with a rash from handling it.
