Has to do with whom and what you live for. If you live for yourself and your own purposes your life might become very empty, you'll loose your eternal life and those worldly things can be gone in a second and your are left with nothing to live for. If you live your life for God according to his word, you'll gain eternal life plus the joy of the Lord in this life.

If you are seeking only after gratifying yourself, you will ultimately lose your life. If you ignore yourself and seek Jesus, your reward will be life. Basically it is a call away from selfishness and a call for sacrifice. I also happen to believe that the life mentioned here is not just heaven. We will experience a more abundant life on earth as well. By abundance I do not mean money or stuff ( that is the illusion we chase when trying to gratify ourselves). Rather we will have better relationships and more joy when we live for Him.

In my opinion, Jesus was talking about two kind of life here. First, the life that seems very precious to us, one we are accustomed not to live without (e.g. material, power, relationship, control). According to Jesus if we choose to let go this type of life which is basically earthly and limited, in exchange of life He expounded in the Bible - the spiritual life - we will ultimately find what life is really about.
Makes sense, because earthly life is bound to lose anyway upon death. But knowledge gain from pursuing spiritual life will reap spiritual benefit in the end which is everlasting.
Oh, I think I perfectly understood what you mean "writing dumb stuff" but reporting is bit harsh don't you think so?

I would have to study this but I dont think this is talking about dying for Jesus. The reason I say that is some of the verses before that. I think and thats without studying this, that losing his life means forsaking others to follow Jesus. Lets look at it this way. If a catholic boy or girl gets saved, then to that family they are counted dead and I think the same is with jews. So to that boy or girl who got saved they lost there life to follow Jesus. But study it and see what you come up with.

I lacked the words to explain what was in my head so I found a commentary by Chuck Smith who explains it nicely...
II. WHAT IS MEANT BY, "HE THAT FINDETH HIS LIFE SHALL LOSE IT."?
A. He that lives only for himself, thinks only of himself, will be an ultimate loser.
1. That which you do for yourself will burn as wood, hay, and stubble in His fires that will test our works.
2. That which you amass for yourself, you will never be able to take with you.
3. You have only one life, and it will soon be past, and only what's done for Christ will last.
I think it is a reference to the temporal life and spiritual life in contrast. A play on words. Jesus said alot of things that made you stop and have to use your mind to figure out. I hope this helped.

People look for what they want. what they want is usually some superficial, sugar-coated fantasy. Most of those don't last very long and when they leave you, they take part of you with them.
The life that the Bible encourages will cost you the life that the average person considers the standard, but in the end, you'd be better off making that sacrifice.

That quote topic is actually mentioned many time in the bible:
Matthew 10:38-39 And he that taketh not his cross, and followeth after me, is not worthy of me. [39] He that findeth his life shall lose it: and he that loseth his life for my sake shall find it.
Matthew 16:24-25 Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. [25] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.
Luke 9:23-24 And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.
Luke 14:27 And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.
My interpretation is that if you go against Christ to save your own life, or go against Christ teachings to benefit your own life (in order to make money, be popular, ect.) then you are finding your life and therefore in the end you will lose it by not entering the kingdom of heaven. However, when you lose your life for Christ, or lose or do not try to obtain material things for yourself and stick to the teachings of Christ, then you will find that life you gave up in heaven.

It has to do with becoming a humble servant like Christ was. Instead of living for our own satisfaction or our own selfish gratification, we live to serve others. In doing so we find the joy of life.

Eternal life and carnal life.
He that is anxious to save his “temporal” life, or his comfort and security here, shall lose “eternal” life, or shall fail of heaven. He that is willing to risk or lose his comfort and “life” here for my sake, shall find “life” everlasting, or shall be saved.
