My kids both got the shot about10-12 yrs ago. Do they need a booster? I'd hate for them to get chicken pox as an adult. We have no medical ins. for 2 more months, so can't ask a dr. or go to a dr. right now.

Get their varicella antibodies titre done. If it is high enough, the kids do not need a booster.

Varicella (chickenpox)
The varicella vaccine protects against chickenpox (varicella), a common and very contagious childhood viral illness.

Immunization Schedule
The varicella vaccine is given by injection between the ages of 12 and 18 months. Older children who have not had chickenpox may also receive the vaccine. Kids 13 years or older who have not had either chickenpox or the vaccine would need two vaccine doses at least 1 month apart.

Why the Vaccine Is Recommended
The varicella vaccine prevents severe illness in 95% of children who are immunized. It's up to 85% effective in preventing mild illness. Vaccinated kids who do get chickenpox generally have a mild case.
I think you children are protected with the one shot.
You may want to call the health department to check if you are still unsure.

Well the vaccine is not as good as natural immunity. I wouldn't have got the shot in the first place. But that is done so you need to consider the booster and the immunity created by the vaccine decreases over time, as opposed to natural immunity which lasts a lifetime. Chicken pox when it is caught later in life is more harmful and can cause more serious problems. Not my kids so not sure what i would do at the point you are at. But i think you can EASILY wait the 2 months at least without a worry. good luck on your health care decision.
