I have an invention I want to submit but don't have the finances, there are roughly 1.9-2.4 million accidents from my research related to my invention, and more that could be prevented that are blamed on other factors. This idea could help prevent at least 40-60% of them, and I am not being unrealistic or over zealous.
I don't want to disclose my idea in the fear it can be stolen. I really want to start approaching auto manufucturers in the hope one of them will be willing to help me with the cost of patenting it and offering it to other auto manufucturers.
Is there any suggestion you can give, I don't really need elaborate display's as it is such a simple idea, all I need is the protection that once revealed, they can't use the idea for themselves without buying the rights.
I would hire an attorney, but they require upfront payment which I don't have at the moment. I would wait till I have the money, but people are dying every single day.
Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

In the USA the law protects the person that invents first.

1) Describe your idea in writing and drawings.
2) Date the documents.
3) Show your idea to someone that's not associated with you but who can understand your invention. Have them sign as a witness that they understand the invention and have them date the documents.
4) If you haven't done so yet, research other patents on the USPTO.gov website and seach for related products.
5) File a provisional patent with the USPTO yourself. It is cheap
and offers you protection for 1 year. The clock is running, you now have 1 year to file a patent.
6) Show your idea to potential backers. Have them sign a none disclosure agreement in advance.
7) If you get support have a lawyer check your provisional. You probably didn't do as good of a job as you thought.
8) File patents.

Above all, don't fail in love with your idea. I've seen it destroy people. The odds of getting rich are very very low. Find people that can help move your idea to a product.

If you have really invented the better mousetrap, go to the people with money and present it. Perhaps a business owner in your area. If it is that great, I'm sure they will become a silent partner.
