The 15-Year-Old Demerara rum known as the El Dorado Special Reserve has been adjudged "Best Rum Worldwide" for the second consecutive year at the International Wine and Spirits Competition held in London in May 1999. This rum won the coveted "Wray and Nephew Trophy" as well as the Gold Medal.

In addition, the El Dorado Spice Rum won a silver medal, while the El Dorado 12-Year- Old and the 5-Year-Old received commendations.

In addition, connoisseurs and collectors in the United Kingdom, Canada and the United States have overwhelmingly received the exclusive Millennium El Dorado 25-Year-Old rum, launched in December. Yesu Persaud, executive chairman of Demerara Distillers Limited, declared that, "This is a once for all product. There are only 3,000 bottles available globally. It's expensive but, you know, it's a limited edition and it's expensive to produce and, it's a beautiful decanter. So, that's now on the market."

In the world of rum production, quality comes from centuries of experience in blending, distilling and maturing. In the business since 1670, Demerara Distillers has that pedigree - plus the unique facility to provide the world with the finest Demerara rums. To provide the greatest variety of rums of character, the company maintains the traditional methods and standards of an age-old industry, combined with the modern technology for quality rum and alcohol production.

In 1995 D.D.L became the first distilling company in Guyana and the Caribbean region to gain accreditation under the ISO 9002 International Quality Standards. The ISO 9002 certification was for D.D.L's bottling operations for both beverage and liquor.

This tradition of excellence has produced the finest family of Demerara rums under the trademark of El Dorado, including El Dorado Superior White (the white gold of Guyana), smooth El Dorado Golden and rich El Dorado Dark. The El Dorado 15-Year-Old, the El Dorado 12-Year-Old, and the El Dorado 5-Year-Old are all well known in the Caribbean and international markets.

New products launched in 1999 include the El Dorado Chocolate Cream Liqueur and El Dorado Rum Cream Liqueur. These two liqueurs are considered of the highest international standards, and sales to date have been very encouraging.

D.D.L. is also a leading supplier of bulk rum to bottlers in Europe and North America.

It is one of the few Caribbean companies that has established a base overseas and has subsidiary companies in Europe, Breitenstein BV in Holland and DD (U.K.) in Britain, which continue to play a key role in its marketing effort. D.D.L also has two subsidiaries in the Caribbean, Superior Distribution Limited, a distribution company in Trinidad and CSR (D.D.L.) St. Kitts Ltd. CSR is a joint venture with Baron Edmond de Rothschild.

Managing Director Komal Samaroo is very optimistic about the future of the Demerara rum in the international market. "In the United States, we're working on 16 states. It's a huge market. Each state is almost like a different market because you have to have a different licensing arrangement, so, we have decided to work in 16 states where we already have distributors and we have a presence in most of those. We are now going to support that with marketing funds to widen the distribution and increase our presence. Next year we'll go another 16 and so in three years' time, we should be all across the United States.

"In Canada, we are in Ontario. We are present with El Dorado 5-Year-Old in all the liquor stores in Ontario. And, within a matter of two months, we should be launching two products in Mexico. We've already got a distributor there. Then in South America we are in Ecuador now. We are in Peru, in Bolivia and Chile."

The history of D.D.L. dates back to the early 17th century when Guyana (then British Guiana) had a large number of sugar estates each with its own small distillery converting molasses, the major by-product into rum. Each sugar estate produced its own distinctive rum and each rum was given a mark e.g. SWR, AN, ICBU depending upon the sugar estate where it was produced.

These rums were shipped to England and thus began worldwide trading under the Demerara rum name, which today only can be applied to rums distilled in Guyana.

In those early days most of the distilleries were owned by the English companies Booker Bros. McConnel & Company Limited, trading as Booker Rum Company, and Sandbach Parker Holdings, trading as Diamond Liquors Limited. These two companies were amalgamated in 1976 as Guyana Liquor Corp. and in 1983, this was changed to Demerara Distillers Limited.

By 1960, technological advances and market demands brought about the amalgamation of the many small distilleries into four distilleries, which were further consolidated into D.D.L. with one distillery operation at Plantation Diamond on the East Bank of Demerara River.

D.D.L. has the most modern technology so that it can produce rums that vary from the traditional Navy type to the popular extra light rums.

Over the years, the company has been diversifying its activities, and is now a major producer of carbonated beverages. It holds the franchise for Pepsi, 7-Up and Slice and has its own wide range of Soca beverage flavors. As a natural extension to its distillery operations, D.D.L. produces carbon dioxide and dry ice.
