What's the best software to let friends access specific folders (and therefore files) on my computer? After a brief search I found Q-next, GigaTribe, and Hamachy... Anyone know which one is best?

You could set up a virtual network. This would put your computer on the same network as your friend (or multiple friends)

I have come across software that can do this very quickly and easily for the non geek type who doesn't want to go about configuring routers and vpns etc. See the link below for details

Are you all on a small home network? Or are you trying to do this over the internet?

If you're all on a home network, it's easy.

Open my computer, and find the folder where your music is stored. Right click on the folder and select "sharing and security" Depending on how things are set up, there should be a checkbox that says "share this folder" If not, there should be some clickable text that says something like "Don't run the network setup wizard, just enable file sharing" click that, then hit apply. Give it some time to run, and things should show up when your friends click on "My network places" either on thier desktop or on their "My computer" window.

One more thing, if the option to share is grayed out, that means it's in a private folder. The best way to get around this is to make a new shared folder on the root of your C: (such as C:\Music) drive, then put the music in there.

I've tried a bunch of 'em...Hamashi was very slow, Qnex is too complicated and not very user friendly…the best one I've found so far is GigaTribe http://www.gigatribe.com , it lets you share specific folders on your computer with friends in your network and it's easy to use. Plus, there's no limit as to the size of the files you share, so no more mailing of CDs/DVDs to friends.

I know about msn messenger, but you have to configure things seperately for each friend I think and it's a mess; with GigaTribe you can easily explore friends' folders marked as shared. Plus, interrupted file exchanges resume with no data loss, you don't get that with msn or any of the other ones I've seen, very useful when you're transferring movies between friends...
