In the USA cemetaries are by "towns." There are town cemetaries where jews, christians, catholics are buried together. And you can have either the director of the funeral home or a Secular Humanist "Celebrant" (like a pastor for Atheists) perform the funeral if you want.

The undertaker provides the service. Burial, like marriage is a civic event legally. If you choose to have a person present a religious service, that's fine, but the legal papers and the rule of law regarding burials or marriage in your community must be followed.

Is your question about the person saying words at the ceremony or about the burial ground? The family chooses who says the words, sometimes a person is buried without any words or officlail ceremony.

You can request wheter or tno you want a burial without ceremoney in your will and by law it has to be obeyed.

My instructions on my passing are;
1. Cremate my body.
2. My friends get together and share stories about me while they listen to the Grateful Dead.
3. Spread my ashes in the ocean.
4. Keep my picture so they can remember me.

That's it. Don't need no priest babbling baloney. Don't need to bury my rotting corpse in a hole in the ground. Don't need to make some funeral director richer just to dispose of so much useless meat.

When you die and have no religion, the funeral director can preform you ceremony at the funeral home of choice without any religious protocol. Be cremated and you don't have to worry about what type of cemetery you're buried in.

Cremation. The ceremony is for the family, not for the departed, so if the family is religious, in all likelyhood, the ceremony will be too. Personally, given that I will be dead at the time, I am sure that I won't care.

The funeral homes can do a service .Or family calling it a celebration of life.We did one in Sept.for my cousin who would have haunted us all if we had taken his ashes to a church.We talked about his life and how he touched us all in his own crazy way and listened to his favourite band the Tragically Hip.
