Best AND most reliable?
A Toyota Land Cruiser or Lexus LX 450.
Unstoppable off-road. Comfortable. Luxurious and powerful and NO ONE matches it for reliability. Not BMW, certainly not Mercedes.
Any Lexus SUV will offer unparalleled reliablity and first-class luxury appointments.
Check Consumer Reports for unbiased reliability ratings. It's much more relevant than anecdotal evidence from people here.
The new Mercedes GL looks to be an exceptional vehicle, but I did not mention it because you mentioned reliability and Mercedes reliability is well-below average these days. If reliability is a priority then Lexus is the brand you want to look at.

Money not tan issue? Then bar none the BMW X-5. I have owned 4 of these beauties and never once had to take it in for repairs due to manufacturing concerns. Put approximately 225,000 km on one with ZERO complaints. Rides like a sports car, mileage is great, seating never tires you out, tons of cargo space, totally reliable....... Can't say enough about them.
Get the 3 Litre for better economy.
Do Not by the X-3 Suv. It is not made directly by BMW. It is outsourced to a north american conglomerate and has very low ratings for customer complaints, fit and finish and interior noise.
