My Dad caught a 15 pound northern(his biggest one) with his bare hands. Him and Grandpa were out fishing in a canoe and one of their friends had just had a big northern on and it had snapped the line when dad saw it surface so they chased it all around the lake and dad finaly grabbed it. It was huge!!!

In the mud banks of west Texas, we would go along side of the rivers banks and feel for big ol yellow cats. When we found her, we would slowly work up to her gill covers and nab her.. boy howdy, the fight was on. Although that was a challenge, we also used gaffs and would hook her and pull her out of the dens built in the banks and that's a fight all by it self. . A few years later, if I went fishing without a rod I used a good compound bow and fishing arrows and rig. Good luck.

Yes all the time when i was a kid in Montana. Those were the days my friend. Playing in the swamp and catching creatures in it and the small stream that flowed out of it. Even caught a muskrat once but wasn't allowed to keep it.

Not fish, but my friend and I used to do this for newts when we were kids. We caught three newts over maybe five years of searching in the stream... but we did catch them all by hand :) Oh, and we definitely didn't eat them.

you need to force the fish into a shallow area or a weir. and then close off their means of escape. then try to scoop them up onto the shore.
