California does require that each food establishment have some staff members certified in the safe handling of foods. The requirement is not expected of every employee though. Most employees don't have it. Typically it will be kitchen management staff that get the certificate and/or the business owners.

County health departments monitor the businesses for compliance.

There are companies that offer the class online as well as community colleges throughout the state. If you want to work in management it's a good idea to take the class. It only takes a few hours and then pass a simple multiple-choice test. When the law first took effect about ten years ago, we were a vendor to a local community college. They held a special one day class for all food service vendors to the college and got us our certificates with little pain or trouble.

I lived in CA before I moved to Nevada. I don't remember having to get a certificate in CA. In Nevada that is a whole different story. In NV you need a Sheriffs license and a food certificate.

I've never been asked for my Serv-Safe certificate. I just told them I was certified and certified to teach, and I guess they believed me or something. It was a nicer place too.

You can get a lot of foodservice jobs without one, but they'll probably want you to take the class at some point.

I'm not too sure of this one...call your local Health dept. and ask they'll give all that info.In Ca.it will probably cost you to acquire, so ask them the cost of whatever they tell you that you'll need...Good luck.
