I think NZ may have a policy of restricting access to small islands for cultural, environmental and logistical reasons, just to stop people ruining them. I know Australia resricts access to places like Lord Howe Island for those reasons. You can apply to visit but it would be harder to live there.

Some islands are privately owned, too.

Can you name some places specifically that you are interested in? Because I can only think of the Cook Islands and even then, I'm not totally sure that that is a New Zealand territory.

Why would you want to live there anyway? The people from the Pacific Islands all move to New Zealand.

As far as I know, if you are a New Zealand citizen, the only place outside of New Zealand that you can live is Australia.

My advice - go hang out in Manukau and pretend you are in the islands :-)

Who are you trying to hide from??????????????

there are not many small Pacific islands that you would be able to live on even if you wanted to. Be realistic, some are habitated by scientists and that is all, They are conservation estate, and no one lives there as you need work etc
you could live on Stewart Island, but the locals there would probably eat you if they thought you were a bit dodgy

Well...yeah why couldn't you unless NZ Govt have quotas for the amount of people living on the smaller islands.
