Hi,
You will need lots of patience, some pups pick this up quicker than others.
Pups have very small bladders and can't hold themselves until around 5 months old.
I would also get rid of the paper, you are giving out signs to the pup it is acceptable to go indoors.
Take your pup out very often, after sleeping, mealtimes playtimes etc, when it goes outside give lots of praise and a reward.
Ignore the pup when it goes inside, just clean up and take pup out.
Good luck you will get there.

you aren't supposed to put it outside. You are supposed to TAKE it out every hour or less if you see him looking for somewhere to go. Don't put paper int he house otherwise you are giving him permission to toilet int he house. He won't know the difference between toiletting in one place being good (newsppaper) and bad somewhere else. Housetraining is very time consuming. Take the pup out, stay with it, tell him to "be quick" or "do a weewee". When he obliges, praise him. You may end up standing out there for 15 minutes while he sniff about and finds a place to go but that's all part and parecel of housetraining. There is enough info out there about how to housetrain and if you fo a yahoo answers search, nearly every day someone asks this question and I give the same answer.
NEVER EVER rub a dogs face in the mess, never whack him or shout at him if he does it indoors. You will scare and confuse him. He won't know why the hell you are angry and may come to associate the anger with the mess, not the fact that the mess is in the house. When this happens he will start to eat his own poo in order to hide the thing which makes you angry.
What book did you buy which didn't give even the basics of housetraining?

The best way to train your pup quickly is to do what your doing..take it out every hour but you must reward the pup as soon as it wees etc (food is usually the best incentive and a silly happy voice!)make it clear that this is exactly what you want it to do .Always use the same exit and the pup will soon be asking to go out by going to the door..if you have any accidents just clean them up with pet detergent .If you catch your pup in the act inside then don't be too Cross just say" no "firmly and take it outside even if it doesn't do anything else you are giving it the right signals. This is the method i always use and it only took 2 weeks to train my staffy cross pup.good luck

You are going along the right lines.
Leave the paper down even when you are not out and after meals, or if you catch him starting to pee elsewhere in the house, immediately lift him and put him on the paper. Give him lots of praise when he is finished. After a few days, if he is using the paper put some paper just outside the door and follow the same rules as before, gradually moving the paper further from the door, it should only take a couple of weeks until he is going outside without the paper.
Try not to stay out of the house too long until he is trained.
Good luck!

Well you can't leave a dog in the house while you are gone until he is FULLY trained. While you are home, make sure he is within your site. While you are watching him, if he is in the process of pottying, then say NO! and immediately take him outside or place him on his papers to show him that those spots are the potty areas. If he does get out of your site and you find his mess, do not stick his nose in it or reprimand him. He will not understand these actions. Take him outside. Also, if you think he will need to go soon, you should take him outside in increments of 15 minutes, so that he will learn that outside is for pottying and then he will be allowed back inside. If you are not home, keep him outside (if you have a fenced yard) or put him in his crate. Hope this helps :)

The key to getting a dog to do what you want is to reward good behaviour. You need to stay with him when he goes outside and give him lots of praise and a treat when he goes.
Another important key to success is consistancy. It is not fair for you to expect him to understand that he should go outside when you are there, and inside on the paper when you aren't there. You have to decide to go for one method or the other until hes old enough to be able to wait for you to come home when you are out. (You don't say how old he is)
If you decide to stick with the outdoors method you will have more success if you use a crate and keep him locked up when you are out. Of course he shouldn't be left for more than 3-4 hours at a time.
If you decide to stick with paper training method, you will then have the difficulty of teaching him when he is older that actually its not ok to go in the house and he'll still have to learn to go outside.
I recommend crate training because the dog learns quickly and there is less chance of accidents.

I have two staffie pup's 1 at 4 months and 1 at 6 months. during the day they go out side and at night they go on there papers. cant see them in the dark in the garden. they are all black.my oldest pup was really quick at training the youngest has just got the nack to it. if i go out they are both crate trained. this is for the best on both sides 1 for my furniture and wires so they don't get hurt and my things stay intact. training is hard but you will get there.

They don't go in the garden because it is instinctive for them not to mess up their own yard, so you have to walk him, and keep walking him till he does something. That way he will learn what is expected of him and do it more or less to order. Actually, some dogs find it almost impossible to go unless their digestive processes have been stimulated with exercise so I cannot emphasise the walking enough.

Also, as someone else has pointed out, you really should not be leaving a young pup alone in the house. He will become stressed and this can sometimes lead to destructive behaviour. As far as possible try to let him accompany you on short trips, visits etc. It is also good for his socialisation to take him to other houses where he can meet people and other dogs and become adjusted to .noise. Do not overstimulate your pup but do try to expose him to as much normal outside activity as possible.

It can be a very long process but you need to ignore when he does it wrong in the house. You'll need to wait for ages outside until he goes to the toilet. When he does it give him lots and lots of praise.

When he does go, you can repeat a phrase so that he learns to go on command. We use "Hurry Up" which really helps if you want them to go just before a long car ride.
