What I am getting at is, people who criticise religions often contribute the most to their reform, eg Luther etc. So that eventually, Islam may become just another god-botherer cult like christianity, and no longer a threat.

[006:159] Verily, those who divide their religion and break up into sects (all kinds of religious sects), you (O Muhammad [Peace Be Upon Him]) have no concern with them in the least. Their affair is only with God, Who then will tell them what they used to do.

(V.6:159) It is said that the Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] recited this Verse and said: "These people are those who invent new things (Bid'ah) in religion and the followers of the vain desires of this Muslim nation, and their repentance will not be accepted by God." (Tafsir Al-Qurtubi)
[It has been narrated in the Hadîth Books (At-Tirmidhi, Ibn Mâjah and Abu Dâwûd) that the Prophet [Peace Be Upon Him] said: "The Jews and the Christians will be divided into seventy-one or seventy-two religious sects and this nation will be divided into seventy-three religious sects, all in Hell, except one, and that one is: on which I and my Companions are today, i.e. following the Qur'ân and the Prophet's Sunnah (legal ways, orders, acts of worship, statements)."]

No the Pious believers who have the knowledge of the Sunnah and Qu'ran and live like the Salaf this is the true pure Islam. The Salaf were the first three generations of Muslims, they had the best of knowledge. This is how Islam is practiced in Saudi Arabia.

How exactly did he save Islam? By slandering the Prophet (peace be upon him). Wow! What a saviour! Your comparison is feeble. He is nothing like Luther.

Islam needs no other saviours beside the Prophet (peace be upon him). Islam nonetheless has guardians (i.e. mujaddid, prominent Imams) who guard Islamic orthodoxy with the likes of Imam al-Ghazali, Imam al-Bukhari, Imam al-Syafie, Imam Ibnu Kathir, Imam Ibnu Taymiyyah, and so forth. In modern times, we have emminent scholars of al-Azhar University, Sunni Islam highest religious authority and Grand Ayatollahs of Shia Islam to guard and protect the sanctity and originality of Islam.

God knows best

No. Moderate and devout people will save Islam. Salman Rushdie is a heretic and far-leftwing at best.
