I have a painting by J. Chester in watercolours of egyptian falucas
sailing offshore against a desert background.

The usual sites did not have J. Chester. (absolute art.com, lstelieronline.com, and some others). You probably need to call a dealer, gallery or auction house.

Sounds very interesting. Do you have his complete name? You might be searching for Grenville J. Chester. He was a famous Egyptologist. His work might be slightly too early But my guess is that you have a watercolour that he produced during a visit to Egypt to record the artifacts found at a site excavation. He is mentioned in the bibliography for this site on tomb excavations in Egypt.

The fact that the subject of the painting is a falucas, one of the beautiful sailboats used even today on the Nile, makes me think this is likely who you are looking for. As far as the value of the painting, I think you should have it evaluated by an art evaluation house which specialises in Egyptian art and artifacts. They are also likely to have existing clients who might be interested in acquiring something from Grenville J. Chester.

I can only find reference to J.Chester (Skip) Armstrong.
