Its a story.... like a fisherman's tale, it can grow, so who cares exactly how big they may have been, or how small?

Jerusalem was a backwater little town on the edge of the Desert, at the edge of the Babylonian empire. The bible says that the wall was rebuilt in 52 days.

Archaeological evidence shows the former city, then a town (446BCE) to have been south of the present old city, about the size of two football pitches, long and banana shaped.

Truth is - see Leviticus 23:11 and Thunderpants 10:2 - Nehemiah had a bad back and had to give up after about 3 weeks' work. His brother in law Nev had to take over. Now Nev trained as a barman, not a brickie, so the results were laughable, to say the least. Still, it does explain the little snug in the souhtwest corner, near the well.
