He surely would not weep for Lazarus since He knew He was going to greatly glorify God in raising him back from the dead.

No, He wept for the sin that has caused death and for the pitiable and miserable state man is in because of sin. That all are subject to death. The enormity of our sin is shown by the enormity of the sacrifice He would have to make to redeem us. Death is not natural to man but came because of sin. He loves His creation and is tender towards us.

As dewcoons has very well described to us He also wept for the unbelief and hardness of heart , to varying degrees, of those about Him. If only they would truly trust Him and were not so taken up with their own prejudices and thoughts. How foolish we are.

Papaz71 and AdoreHim also raise good points.

It was at least two things: He wept as a man would weep for the passing of His friend (human side) and He wept, for He knew that He had to perform the miracle and for the pain of this world Lazarus would feel again. Lazarus was a believer in Heaven, and Christ wept because He had to bring him back (deity side)!

He did raise Lazarus to show the people that He is the Resurrection. He wept because He knew how Martha and Mary must have felt when their brother died, before Jesus got there. This shows us He knows how we feel. Without Christ we would all die, and Jesus weeps daily for those who will not come to receive eternal life from Him

Interesting question. I think that Jesus wept often for all the people of the world because he loved them so much. There are other examples in the bible. Also, he knew that Lazarus had to go through the pain and transition of death. A better question would be: Is it possible that Jesus wept when Lazarus died because he knew that he would have to raise him and Lazarus would than have to die a second death?

When you read the whole story, Jesus stated - as soon as he heard about Larazus - that the sickness would not end with Lazarus death. He then waited four days to respond to Lazarus' sisters request that He come and pray for Lazarus. It is not until Lazarus had died (would Jesus knew and announced before anyone had told him) that Jesus headed to the tomb.

When he arrives, he finds the funeral over, and the family in mourning. The sister are blaming him for not coming, and the others are mocking him for not being able to save Lazarus.

The scriptures then says that Jesus groaned in his spirit and was troubled. He was upset - not that Lazarus had died - but with how the people were reacting to his death - blaming God and mocking him.

Jesus had already told them that the sickness would not end with Lazarus death. Yet they did not believe. When he arrived, he told Martha that Lazarus would still live and she did not believe. He finally sees the tomb and there is Mary weeping and wailing. It was that unbelief that brought the tears to his eyes, not sorry over the death of Lazarus.

Jesus already knew that Lazarus was going to be resurrected. He stated that at the beginning of the whole event. It was the lack of faith of those around him that produced the tears.

If you continue to read the story, Jesus would go from Bethany and the resurrection of Lazarus on to Jerusalem and his crucifixtion.

Just had Jesus had told the disciples in advance that Lazarus would be raised, so he had told them of his own arrest, crudifixion, death and resurrection. Just as death was not the end for Lazarus, so it would not be the end for Jesus. The whole thing was designed to prepare his disciples for his own death and resurrection.

Excellent question, thanks for asking it,
Jesus felt the pain of those who felt they had lost their brother and friend to death. Remember, Lazarus was Jesus' friend also. I'm sure that while Jesus lived on the earth he too dealt with the loss of friends or family. Perhaps even his adoptive father Joseph, who is not mentioned in the Gospels after the family trip to the temple. Jesus may have also cried knowing that through his Father he would bring Lazaurus back and as a result many people would put their faith and hope in his Father. (John 11:3-4)

I'm not God, so I can't speak for Him-- I can only say my personal view on it. Take it with a grain of salt. :)

Jesus had the power to bring *anyone* to life, but He didn't. People still died while He was on the earth. Lazarus was someone close to Him, and as a human He felt the pain of losing a friend.

Was the decision to raise Him pre-determined? Or was it a split-second choice He made? I don't know. And without that answer, it's rather difficult to fully answer your question.

He was moved by Mary of Bethany's emotional plea to him. He responds like this several times to women around him. He took great sympathy with the widow of Nain when he saw her tears (Lk 7:11ff). He even sided with the emotional display of the sinner woman in Lk 7 36-50. Here, he sees Mary's tears, a woman he obviously knows and cares for (the text says he loved her in Jn 11:5) and is moved by the plight she has suffered.

Jesus wept because Lazarus smelled so bad. It was like burnt onions.
