What are you thoughts on speed cameras.

Do you think they are a method of government funding or a good way of improving road safety.

Do you know of any examples to back upi your theory.

Do you know of any good websites that can answer my question???

Your help is most appreciated.

I would say speed cameras are good at reducing motorists speed for a certain distance, that being the distance between the sign saying 'speed camera ahead' and the distance far enough away from the camera (once passed), to put your foot down again. I know in Wales that some speed cameras are hidden behind other signs or bushes, why , don't know.

I would love to know how much money has been made by the government from speed cameras and how much of it goes to improving road safety.

Perhaps when/if the conservatives get in, they will privatise them, as the do that with everything the people have already paid for in taxes, then they can make some more money out of them but get rid of them just before it becomes too obvious that the revenue from them is being used inappropriately.

It depends where you are; for example in France there is a large warning sign 200 or so meters before every camera, therefore I don't suppose the revenue is very much. The effect has been dramatic in the reduction of Motorway speeding and the normally speed crazy French are all behaving very properly.

Here in Victoria, Australia, they are used by the State Government to raise income, under the guise of road safety.

Example: Our road toll dropped by 2 .. yes TWO last year despite the cameras exploding in numbers and of course, resultant and increasing fines. Yet the government claims they help reduce the road toll.

They serve only to buffer up the coffers of greedy governments.

BTW : This is not a view from sour grapes, I have not been fined by them. I just know they raise only money and not increase safety.

I speed regularly,
I have no points,
driving is a calculated risk,
for all I know speed cameras have already stopped me killing someone,
for all I know speed cameras have saved my life!
There is no way of proving my theory,
It takes faith. Drive as you would like to be driven!

welll i wud say both really sumtimes there is a need of speed cameras but in sum places there are occasions when they are there when really shudnt be.
it saves lives by restraining drivers frm speeding but sumtimes accidents happen bcoz drivers spend half their concentration on speed cams rather than on the car.!
