What are your criteria? Islamic terrorists have been active in the Mideast, Africa, the Philippines, Spain, the UK and the US. That comes pretty close to qualifying. It's just that the terrorists are defined by ideology instead of geography.

Get ready for it, I think it is a lot closer than you think. I read a news report on how Israel is training for a Nuclear strike on Iran. The main uranium enrichment facilities are under 70 feet of rock, the report stated that the Israelis plan is for the first strike to be conventional bombs to make a crater in the rock than follow up with low yield nuclear bunker buster bombs. These bombs are only 1/15th the strength of the bomb used on Hiroshima but Nuclear all the same.
If that happens that could be the spark that sends the entire middle east into chaos. If that happens I hope Iran does something stupid and attacks the US, than we would have the perfect excuse to wipe Tehran off the map.

I doubt there'll be a full scale war with two sides pitted against each other and a fight until one surrenders. If there were a war like that, it would be over far too quickly. I expect that all this aggression and hatred going on at the moment will continue like this for many many years...there won't be widespread destruction, just destruction on local scales. It's good for governments that way, they can make money from arms deals and keep their populations afraid and subordinate. The 'war' between 'western civilisation' and the 'Arab world' is probably more a symbiotic relationship deep down than one of simple, genuine hatred. People wouldn't bother with genuine hatred if it didn't gain them either money or power.

World War designations usually occur after the fact.
Some people consider the Cold War as WW3, and the current worldwide effort against terrorism as WW4.
If you're considering WW3 only to be open and hot warfare between major nation-states around the world, I don't think that's going to happen, at least not anytime soon. The major nations have too much at stake to take the risk of allowing issues to escalate out of hand to that point.

There never really had been "world wars" before. The first two so-called world wars were started by imperial states who drew their vassal states into them. With now almost every nation on earth at least nominally independent, it is hoped the majority will not be foolish enough as to be drawn into a "Third World War".

No, I'd like to think that we as a planet are passed a point where we can have a "global war". I think it would be next to impossible to convince people (especially the people with a high standard of living) that we need to pour everything into some huge military conflict.

yes, if only because of "the world getting smaller". More countries are gaining access to nuclear weapons, which nullifies countries like the U.S. using them as deterents. Terrorism and violence are on the rise, petrolium will eventually run out (20-30 years I believe is the estimate) and just general instability around the world.

Yes, with all the nations now having nukes, and wanting to flex their nuclear might, WW III may happen sooner than anyone can imagine.
