She is spayed and 16 years old. She has never done this before & it is driving us out of our minds. She has a full dish of food, water & a clean litter box. She is slowing way down and seems to have arthritis, doesn't even go up stairs any longer. Any suggestions?

At that age she is apparently sick or in pain. You need to get her to the vet to be checked. This is how a cat tells you they are not feeling well.

First of all, just because she is 16 doesn't mean she is necessarily in pain or in any medical distress. I have a 16 year old female cat who is in PERFECT health. She is about 17 lbs and the vet can't believe how healthy she is! She too was spayed as a kitten. She still brings us "presents" such as baby bunnies and birds...so she's still hunting and running...she still gets that "kitten look" sometimes when she plays.

My suggestion: Try to get your cat to be more active during the day. Have a set time in the evening, towards when you are heading to bed, to play with her. Get her to use some energy! Make her feel loved, give her attention. It may take a few days or so to get this new routine down, but, I'm sure once you do both you and the cat will have a good night's rest!

Perhaps she is still adjusting to you and a new environment. Our cats are crate trained-the cage is big enough to hold a covered litter pan and an ottoman with toys strung from the top. When we corral them at night, they know it is bedtime and we don't hear a peep until morning. Of course, they hear the alarm clock and do not appreciate the snooze button, but we sleep thru the night! If she is a good cat, don't give up yet. But if nothing works out, it is better that you take her back than boot her out on the street.

That's heard quite okay for me, b'coz:
1. Most cats are indeed nocturnal animals. Try to make her awake, at least by playing with your hands, and at night she'll sleep like a baby! I often do that to my cat, too...
2. Your cat is old enough, so maybe she's lonely and search for (a) friend/s, or she's trying to search for your attention. Why don't you adopt a new cat, better to be kitten, to accompany her? Or hug her a lot, better if she can go sit on the couch or bed with you.

By the way, if you suspect she had arthritis, you should check her to the vet. It's may quite hurt to her, and maybe that's what she's trying to say: 'I have arthritis! Can't you help me??"
Just maybe.

Unfortunately, it sounds like your cat is in pain. Sixteen is very old for a cat (my own is 15, so I can relate). Take her to a vet; she may simply need something to ease her arthritis, or she may have a more serious problem. Good luck.

It sounds like she may be in pain!!! Our cat did the same thing when He was old. We had to have him put down. Take Her to a Vet. Maybe He can give her some meds if it isn't a serious thing. Good Luck!!!

my cat does the same thing...but you have to remember cats sleep 18 hours a day...

give her some toys, warm blanket and make sure the litter box is clean before bed time

Try giving her a lot of attention in the evening. She might be lonely at night or just bored.
