100 is supposed to be the average IQ, although this is not actually the case. The average IQ in the UK is 104. There are also differences in different ethnic groups, although it must be pointed out that far from indicating differences in intelligence it highlights the cultural bias of the tests themselves. There are also geographical variations. I believe I read that in the UK, the South has a higher average than the North, owing to the best and brightest moving South where the best jobs are. I'm unsure as to the accuracy of this however.

There is also some debate about the differences between the sexes. The average is the same, but the spread is greater in males - there are more very intelligent and very stupid males than females. I should point out that this is a serious over-simplification.

To be a complete pedant, your question actually asks about the average score of a test. This varies considerably. Not all tests are designed to cover the entire range and instead focus on the grouping most people are covered by (80-120 seems to be the norm).

The average IQ is 100. A score of 140 will qualify you for membership of MENSA and at 160+ you are a genius.

The average for every age is 100. Private tutors aren't qualified to administer IQ tests, so I'm afraid your result is meaningless. Though the fact you're unable to work out how IQ works by yourself isn't exactly complimentary to your intelligence. "surely I will gain more knowledge and therefore my score will go up over time?" If you had a test involving knowledge, it wasn't an IQ test.

It is constantly re-evalued to be 100 which is the average. However, if the test are consistently high eg most people are scoring 110 then 110 will be rescaled to be 100 after a while.
