Anyone know anything about a dog food called Authority. It can be purchased at Petsmart and they bill it as being equal to Eukanuba. Know anything about it? It is a good brand for a large breed dog? I want to find a dog food with as much protein and as little filler as possible.

Authority is at about the level of eukanuba. Although I know many who feed it.

However depending on the size of your large breed dog, LOTS Of protein isn't always the best. Excessive protein in your dogs diet if it is young and cause it to grow at an excessive rate. WHICH IS FINE it won't grow any larger then genetics allow it to, but it can cause pano which to a dog can be mild to severe pain and temporary lameness. This GOES AWAY it is similar to growing pains in humans. Nothing to be concerned about but often brought on by excessive protein. I breed, raise and train german shepherds and see it a lot in the breed.

You are correct about wantint to avoid fillers. Products like Royal Canin are breed specific, also Canidae, Nutro Natural Choice Lamb and Rice Formulas, Chicken Soup for the Dog Lovers Soul(yes it is a food!!) Solid Gold, Eagle Pack, and K9 Kraving(raw diet) are some of the best foods I've ever come across and have fed in my own kennel or have seen it used in near by kennels. I also believe there is a product called Blue Buffalo which is carried in some pet stores like petco/petsmart which is supposed to be a better quality food.

Depending on your price range these foods listed go from $30-$45USD for a box/bag in my area.

Regardless of what you feed look at the back of the bag. Check it's nutrients/analysis and ingredients. Things with Glucosamine for hips and joints are a great supplement for large breed dogs, and avoid ingredients like corn meal, corn, anything with corn in it, look for chicken, venison, beef as your primary ingredients.

Good luck.

if it is equal to eukanuba, it is not the best, but is not the worst either...............
canidae, solid gold, california natural, innova, dick van pattens, artemis would be even better quality foods for the money. If you spend that much on eukanuba, you midas well get a good quality dog food like the ones i mentioned................ eukanuba has alot of fillers and ingrediants in it that are not good for your dog.
