3-6 weeks. You can get it faster but you have to have airplane or cruise line rickets.

There are three speed you can get a passport. You can call the Passport agency at 1-877-487-2778 and set up an appointment at your "local"(usually located in the nearest large city to you.eg NYC Philadelphia) Passport agency and get your passport on the same day. in 7-10 business days you can go to your nearest local passport acceptance unit (different than your passport agency) usually the Post Office call 1800 ask USPS for the nearest one and for an extra $60 (which you would also pay at the Pas spot Ac ency) and express mail both ways $13.65 x 2 you will get your Passport in 7-10 business days. You can also not pay the expedited fees at your local Post Office that accepts Passports and get your passport in 4-6 weeks. You should think more along the lines of six weeks because the passport agency in swamped right now with the new rules that you need Passports for the Caribbean Canada and Mexico

not long. i sent mine off on a thursday evening and recieved it the following thursday. i think you can have it done faster but it can cost upto 200 pounds. go to the post office and if you already have filled in the passport application form then the post office do a 'passport checking service' which costs about 7 pounds. this service is really good as they send the passport off for you and make sure everything is correct on the application form. altogether it cost me 73.50 (sorry cant find pound sign on laptop, something wrong with keypad setup). its about 66 pounds for a standard application without the passport check!
ps this is for a uk passport!

Five years ago I sent my passport off for renewal at this time of year, sending via the Post Office. I had it back within a week.
I suspect it's relevant that it was renewal, but the speed does suggest that it's quite a slack time of year, so that processing is fairly quick.

New Application for a U.S. Passport
To obtain a passport for the first time, you need to go in person to one of 9,000 passport acceptance facilities located throughout the United States with two photographs of yourself, proof of U.S. citizenship, and a valid form of photo identification such as a driver’s license.
Acceptance facilities include many Federal, state and probate courts, post offices, some public libraries and a number of county and municipal offices. There are also 13 regional passport agencies, and 1 Gateway City Agency, which serve customers who are traveling within 2 weeks (14 days), or who need foreign visas for travel. Appointments are required in such cases.
You’ll need to apply in person if you are applying for a U.S. passport for the first time: if your expired U.S. passport is not in your possession; if your previous U.S. passport has expired and was issued more than 15 years ago; if your previous U.S. passport was issued when you were under age 16; or if your currently valid U.S. passport has been lost or stolen.

It can take up to 6 weeks. I think mine only took about 3 weeks to get it back. You can pay extra to get it expedited.
