I have a little shih tzu at the moment and was looking on extending my doggy family and I settled on a bulldog. I have always thought highly of them and thought they were gorgeous and so friendly and loyal. Now I am reading that they are dangerous and should be kept away from children etc. So I am reconsidering.

Has anyone had any personal experiences with this or is it just a couple of random attacks? I have never heard of a bulldog being vicious before!

Do they have a history of it that I totally missed out on?

any dog irrespective of breed can be vicous and can attack other dogsn, animals or humans.. A lot depends on how the dog is treated, trained and acclimitised into the family.

Bulldogs can be aggressive.. the real issue is the power of there jaws if they do attack. My mother has some horrific tales of my fathers dog a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Joe was jealous of mymother... wasnt happy at being usurped as the number one focus for my father, and did bite. was it a staffie proble.. not really the dog was jealous and reacted... the issue was that the strenght of the staffies jawa was such that it crushed an armlet mum was wearing

Some dogs are bred especailly to develop strength and aggressiveness.. the pit bull is an example of that.. does it make a pit bull dangerous.. not neccesarily, but badly treated, left alone, abused and uncared for it can be a dangerous dog.. as it reverts to a feral nature.

in short if you care for the dog then its shouldnt be an issue, however you are running a risk if the dog is mistreated it can react in a way which is dangerous to many, especially other dogs, children, infants and the elderly. they can be ahndfull to control if they go off on one, even if on a lead.

Generally people attracte to buying Pitbull's are buying them for their aggressiveness their strength.. its a macho thing, it often is associated with people who want a dog to terrorise of intimdate others..... its part of the breeds attraction to soem. I think there are similarities betwen Amercian Pit Buylls and oither Bull dog breeds (it they are related) but the most recently reported attacks have been pit bull related not staffie or other bull dog breeds

any dog and any breed can be vicious or nice. You must raise them right. The parents temper mental traits can be passed down so I say choose whatever breed you like best. Insist on seeing the parents so you can see there temperament. If you cannot see the parents or they are ill tempered then wait for a litter elsewhere. If they are friendly then you will probably have a good dog no matter the breed. Provided that you socialize him and raise him properly. Obedience training is a serious plus and works wonders if your financial situation will allow.

Bulldogs, like any dogs can be raised incorrectly and "attack." I think the 'random attacks' of which you speak are extremely rare. My opinion is that the dogs were abused.

Bulldogs are strong willed, but are wonderfully goofy and sweet dogs. They have health issues and snore like crazy, but I've never know one to be even mildly vicious.

Start with basic obedience when they are still puppies and you'll have no problems.

dogs are only as vicious as they are taught to be.

They are telling that bulldogs are generally aggresive, but that is only because a lot of bulldogs are taught to be. Bulldogs are a dogbred, which was made to savekeep house and ground. thus there temper may be a little wilder than that of other dogs, but the real viciousness you cann also teach a golden retriever. i for myself met bulldogs which were caring for little children and they were all nice.

so bulldogs can be (and usually are if taught right) nice familiy dogs, you just have to see that you train your dog the right way.

There are different kinds of Bulldog - but if you mean the English Bulldog then no, there is no history of violence. They are as reliable - if not more so! as your shihtzu. Although they were bred originally for baiting bulls (thus low to the ground with powerful shoulders etc)the modern bloodlines are bred for good temperament and make lovely and funny pets.
They have many hereditary problems because they are basically genetically misformed so do your homework before approaching breeders.

Bulldogs are literally not vicious, no. they're easily very sweet and affectionate. inspite of the indisputable fact that, they don't look to be for all of us because of the "cons" that bypass alongside with them. the execs. they're an appropriate breed, they're interesting and interesting, goofy, quite strong with little ones, etc. inspite of the indisputable fact that, there are truthfully cons. The breed isn't inevitably healthful. because of ways they have been bred, they're liable to many medical issues. they're very susceptible contained in the nice and cozy temperature. because of their short nostril, they have respiration issues. the nice and cozy temperature really exacerbates the priority. they're susceptible to eye issues besides alongside with cherry eye and cataracts. it is also not uncommon for a Bulldog to have knee subject matters. so that they don't look to be very healthful and may want to get quite extreme priced in medical charges. upload: As for the respected breeder remark, first a Bulldog from a respected breeder will run about 2,000 funds. extra for a convention high quality puppy. And sure, they are going to nevertheless have well being issues. The diseases this breed is susceptible to are literally not inevitably genetic defects, yet issues that could get up because of the breed accepted of the Bulldog. the fast nostril, respiration issues. The heavy stocky body on short legs, knee issues. epidermis issues might want to be from hypersensitive reactions, or perhaps warmth rash. So even as I agree in case you want a Bulldog to purchase from a respected breeder or bypass by a rescue (the well being issues will be heavily worse with a outside breeder or domestic dog mill, now to not indicate the euthanasia cost that they reason, and no human being might want to favor to help that), that doesn't mean the canines will be thoroughly healthful. Genetically? sure. in the different case, not inevitably.

Shih Tzus are terriers and used to have a reputation for being snappy with kids. Personally I think that a lot of that is how you raise them; plus long haired dogs get snappy when their coats are tangled, it hurts them.
So if you can manage to raise a snappy terrier and kids you're doing something right.
Bulldogs have less of a reputation for being mean than their build would suggest. Try to find a breeder that also has kids so the pups are used to them and you'll be fine.

Any dog can be a great dog, but being vicious is a matter of how they are treated. Pits and bulldogs are sweet dogs. I've had nothing but good experiences with them.

Actually, bulldogs are one of the BEST breeds for children. They are gentle and loving and not at all aggressive. They have a sturdy build and a very high threshold for pain, so they do not snap at children that may be playing with them too rough.
