My school has a man made forest. This project has just been done late 2006. It was created by the Green Club where environment & saving nature resources is concern. But we have a fountain which reacts like a river. People ask me, is it environment friendliness just to keep the pump on all day to pump water out. I couldn't answer them. So my question is, how do I pump water without using electricity?

by gravity....the holding area for water is to be higher then the pump... say main resivor is on top of small hill and main fountain is landscaped on flat area below...then your next project is to make sure water is syphoned back up top....may sound tricky but should be able to done.

Pumping significant amounts of water would take a lot of power, much more than you can get from say an array of solar panels.

You could consider putting a timer on the pump and set it to go on when people are likely to see it. You could save 75% of what you are using now even if it was on for 6 hours.

There is a form of mechanical pump that uses flowing water to pump a small amount of water at high pressure. It works by stopping the flowing water and using the pressure surge to pump the water at pressure. These pumps make a noise every second or so and can be used for example in a flowing river to pump a small amount of water up hill. May not be suitable for you though.

It would be easiest to use a cartesian well from a higher water reservoir - possibly a roof cistern collecting rain water to feed the river.

You might use a wind-powered mechanical pump to lift the water into the reservoir which feeds the river, or you create "green" electricity for your pump e.g. with a wind mill generator or solar panels.

If the artificial river is required to create a habitat for certain plants in that forest environment, switching it off would have a deleterious effect on the system.
