u= volumetric flow rate/ area
area = pie r squared

so you work out the area remeber must be in meters and divide that number by 10 give you meters a second.

Just use the continuity equation with consistent units. Flow in Mass per unit time = Fluid Density X Area of Pipe X Flow Velocity. Now do the rest yourself. This is not a free 'get-your-homework-done-site'.

A pipe diameter of 20mm has an area of 400pi mm^2. The flow rate in mm/sec is 10 (mm^3/sec?) / 400pi mm^2, rather slow because the area is so big compared to the volume.

Answer by ASA is correct in terms of formula used etc.

However a velocity of 31k m/sec is inconceivable in any normal system.

You need to define unit of flow rate to allow correct calculation.

Normal plumbing systems would rarely have flow velocities in excess of a few m/s.

Some gas systems would have higher velocities, but not in the k's of m/s.

flow rate = u times A A = pi (5/12 ft)^2 = 0.5454 square feet flow rate = 5 (ft/s) times 0.5454 ft^2 = 2.727 ft^3/s [as advertised!] To convert to gal/min, you need 1 ft^3 = 7.4805 gallons and 1 minute = 60 s, so you have 2.727 ft^3/s times (7.4805 gal/ft^3) times (60 s/1 min) = I get 1224 rather than 1225, but what the heck.

I am not a plumber but should a volumetric flow rate not be given units eg cm³ /sec?

Basic equation of flow is:
Q=VA ...........eqn 1
Where:
Q is the flow rate in m^3/s.
V is the velocity of flow in m/s.
A is the cross sectional area of flow in m^2.

From the question, Q=10m^3/s I assumed,
A=(3.142*(20*10^-3)^2)/4
=3.142*10^-4m^2

From eqn 1,

v=Q/A
=10/3.142*10^-4
=31826.86m/s
=31,827.0m/s
