I'm sorry that this happened to you and to the cat. But accidents do happen. This is a good reason why cats should be kept indoors at all times and not allowed to run the neighborhoods.
You cannot blame yourself for something that you had no control over. I'm sure you will feel bad for some time. I know I sure would, too.
Recently, my son ran over one of his own cats. It liked to have killed him. He still thinks about it and what he could have done to prevent the incident. But truly there was nothing he could do, the cat got under the car and he couldn't see it. It was an accident.
Try to quit blaming yourself for an accident. With the cat being chipped, the owners should be claiming it soon and at least they will have closure as to what happened to their cat. If you feel that an apology or sympathy is in order, I'm sure you could write a note, and have the veterinarian forward it on to the rightful pet owner for you. Perhaps that would give you closure as well.
Try to let it go. You obviously did not do this intentionally or with malice. Accidents will and do happen. That's what this was... an accident.
My heart goes out to you, and the pet owners.
I will keep you both in my prayers.

Oh I am so sorry! What a horrible, horrible thing to happen but please don't beat yourself up about it, you know it was an accident and you have done absolutely all the right things.
Some cats are streetwise, some sadly aren't. Many years ago one ran straight out in front of me and my ex-husband, he was driving and couldn't stop in time. The cat caught a glancing blow but got up and ran off. It was 2.00 a.m. in a small village in Yorkshire, many miles away from where we lived. We hunted round everywhere but couldn't find the cat. In the end we wrote a little note and put it through the door nearest to where the cat had run out from. We both felt dreadful about it for weeks.
It's good that this cat was chipped and I would think the owners would really appreciate a short note of condolence from you. As you don't know their circumstances, I wouldn't particularly want to advise you to visit. I know if it was one of our cats a note would just be the best thing.
Good luck, I'll be thinking of you.
P.S. I can see you are new to Yahoo Answers, you've had some really good answers to this question but as always there's at least one nasty one! I've voted him/her down and reported them also. I just wanted to say don't let the nasty answer/s discourage you!

You poor thing. How awful. The same thing happened to my husband a few months ago. The cat wasn't killed outright and it ran off so we didn't know how badly hurt it was. We adore cats as well so he was devistated. I hate to say it about such wonderful animals but cats are stupid when it comes to roads. They do run under the wheels of the car. Of course you are upset about what happened but there was nothing you could possibly have done to avoid the accident. It wasn't your fault. Feel sad as you would if you saw any cat hit by a car but don't torment yourself with it. It wasn't a malicious act (one of my cats was killed on purpose by a driver, right in front of me and my husband). You have to let go of the guilt, you did the right thing, because you are a good person. The owners of the cat will know it wasn't deliberate, it was just an accident.

I understand your turmoil, but it was not your fault. You can't control when an animal will run out in front of you, but it happens. If anyone is to blame, it would be the owners that let the cat outside. I am sure that you feel sorry, but I would think the owners are the ones who are feeling the way you do.

I'm very sorry with what happened. I love cats too. Based on your writing, I'm sure you're not the type who would just say "it's just a cat!" I wouldn't either.
But for your part, if it makes you feel better just call up and follow up on it. Keep in mind that even if it wasn't your fault, accidental deaths - even for animals - are not something we could just toss over our shoulders.
Also remember that if you felt bad about it, just imagine how the owners would feel. The cat could be like family to them.
Follow up on it and try to see if there's anything you can do for the owners. Make them feel that even if you can't replace what they lost, that you'd do whatever you can to make it up to them.

well since it's botherin u so much maybe u should get a hold of the owners & if they want (even tho it's no the same) maybe u can offer gettin'em another1? well there's plenty of kittens that need good homes on petfinders.com. U did the right thing by takin' the kitty to the vet n stuff.
Great job! - of dealin with the tough situation since obviously u didn't mean to do it. That's why cats should always stay INDOORS! maybe this will help them realize it?!

The same thing happened to me a couple of years ago - but I didn't kill the cat outright, and it was a baby. It ran under my car from nowhere. I sat with it while it died. It took me months to get the guilt and the images out of my mind. I still cry when I think about it. You gotta keep reminding yourself that there are worse ways for him to have died - this was probably the kindest way for him to have gone. *hug* It does eventually fade...

Yes, I think you should call the vets.
This was an accident, it wasn't something you did deliberately, and you mustn't blame yourself, but you should see it through.
If you don't it will just carry on going round and round in your head. If you speak to the cat's owners you will get closure

It is ok to feel bad and shows that you are a decent human being. I would phone the owners and remember it could have been anyone.
