Do the risks/side effects outweigh the reward of getting rid of the problem? I've never been to a dermatologist before- but I have tried almost everything on the market including Proactive and everything else. And I don't plan on having children.

And by the way, I would kill for dry skin at this point after having dealt with this problem over half of my life! And I'm a lip gloss freak so I don't think that would bother me.

How much does it generally cost US$? How long do you have to take it?

first things first..see a dermatologist. all you may need is something topical! most will make you try other options before prescribing accutane anyway. this is a very high maintenence drug to go on and the results are not permanent. after you go off typically you are good for about 6 months, and then your acne can come back. it may not be as severe but this is not an end-all be-all answer to acne. there are risks of severe depression, for one, and you have to be monitered with blood work as well as, sign a contract that you will stay on birth control(for females) b/c the birth defects from it are awful. my lips cracked, my eye lids got very sore and red, my nose bled, as well as vaginal irritation. it is meant to dry out your oil glands and in turn it pretty much dried me out all over to the point of uncomfort.i got my eyebrows waxed a month after i went off, and had a layer of skin come off. i only had facial acne.
my two cousins had beautiful skin for about 6-10 months and then they broke out again. they have pretty bad chest, and back acne as well. i don't know, i wouldn't go through it again. they promote it as if it were fool-proof and it's just not.
it's a very personal decision bc it is a VERY strong, serious drug. my father-in=law is a doctor of pharm and he told me not to do it. i wish i had listened.
learn everything you can about it. you can never know too much!!

Accutane is a very good drug used to treat acne. I would definately recommend it. I had acne bad when I was a teenager. The dermatologist tried several antibiotics to see if they would work before putting me on it. None helped. I did not have many side effects from it; about the only one I had was dry skin. When on it, you have to have blood tests done about once a month to make sure everything is ok and its not doing any damage to your liver, etc.. Since I have been on it, I have had no more acne at all and no scarring from the previous problem I had before.

First you need to go to your dermatoligst.......there is sooooo many acne medications that do not effect the body in any shape or form, all they do is get rid of acne and the only sidefects are like dry skin and some irration, but that all can be solved with a little oil-free mosturizer, like Clean and Clear Morning Glow it works like a wonder.

Ok back to ance medications there is a lot that are not that expesive, like i use differn (probley have seen it on commuricals on tv) it works great and only costs $25 a tube, and lasts about 3-6 months. The only problem with Rx acne medication it takes a few months for the medication to finally work, it just takes time but over a period of time your face clears up and what is great about Rx medication it prevents acne from coming back (which means you still get some ance but not as much).

I advise you to use a cream Rx medication if your skin is dry or gel for oily skin, and do not use ance pills they do not work as good as the spread-on medication! I hope you have fun in cleaning up ur acne....it is a tough problem, good luck~!

I've been on it too. It is good, but I had serious backache, redness of the face, blood noses and very dry skin and cracked lips. I've had to go on it 3 times because as soon as i went off it, my acne all came back. But my advice to u is to go to the dermatologist and see what he/she says. Sometimes they'll give you something a little milder to see if that works. I've given up on accuatne, and I'm now on the pill and it's helped my skin a lot. GOOD LUCK!!

I'm not from the U.S, so i'm not sure how much it costs, but it's generally quite expensive. Not sure how long you'll have to take it 4- it depends on how bad your skin is. Can be anywhere from 6 months to a year.

i too had all different sorts of acne, from black heads to cystic acne to whiteheads, and i tried everything in the world, clean n clear, clearsil, st. ives, proactive, everything, antibiotics, spironolactone, drinking tons of water, EVERYTHING....and one night i happened on someone on here said to try regular ole blue windex so i did, that was 2 mos ago and my face is radiant now, not even dried out,no pimples cysts, not even any major black heads, and i had tons before, so even 5 now is a blessing, dont know for sure about any negative affects of this useage, but how bad can it be, they sell it everywhere, and my skin looks great for once and no known problems for me so far....good luck

I had acne like everyone else in the world and i tried several products from prescription to your everyday clearasil, neutrogena etc. i found that its not so much as what you put onto your face its what you put into your body. Try changing your diet. Replace ur sodas with juices and waters. I noticed when i stopped drinking as many sodas and eating fried greasy foods i broke out less. Also, i tried using a more natural soap(ambi/cocoa butter soap/black soap) to reduce chemicals and fragrances put onto my skin. Simple, inexpensive, and it worked for me.

I strongly disagree it, because the side effects is far more serious than you think, i would suggest you to find out more about accutane and it's side effects on yahoo! web search if you do not want to see a dermalogist.
