Most baby animals with paws do that motion when nursing, so it is not unusual that a dog is doing it. The problem is that he's doing it when not nursing which tells me that he was most likely weened too early and/or not properly. All you can do is love him more, snuggle him more and help him feel safe and secure.

Joyo is right they do it more out of comfort he is taking the teddy bear and substituting it and does it to have that same type of comfort he did when he was with his litter and mom, it probably helps to soothe him as well being a dog can be a scary thing at times my pitt blu hes still a puppy even though hes the papa to the puppies I have at home and he adores his babies ( teddy bears he has a few and a santa turtle ) that he sits and nuzzles and cuddles and always falls asleep with one. Just let him do this it isnt harmful in any way just be careful if it has button/hard plastic type eyes that if he chews them not to swallow it where it can stay in his tummy and possibly harm him. =]

My dog does the same and she is 4 and deaf..I always thought it was a comfort thing...but also she is using the senses she does have, ie touch and taste...because the hearing isnt there...I think it may be like kids sucking their thumb...??

He is seeking attention and affection, he is using the objects as a substitute for the attention he feels is lacking.Give him plenty of play, ie chasing a ball and fetching, he will grow out of it.

cats and dogs do this when they are babies...it's to push out the milk when they breast feed!!!! If you cat and dog does it to you, should feel very honoured and not disturb them (it can make them moody!)

The same reason your cat does, it's a throwback to puppyhood when he was nursing his mom.
