The Aztec calender or more specifically the 'Eagle Bowl', ends on the date, December 24, 2011. The legend tells it to go something like this;
The 13 Heavens and 9 Hells are 52 years long (1,144 years total). Each of these 9 Hells are said to be worse than the one before. On the final day of the final Hell which is August 17, 1987, Tezcatlipoca, the Aztec god of death, will remove his mask of jade to reveal himself as Quetzelcoatl, the god of peace.
The first age of mankind ended with animals devouring humans, dinosaurs, lack of advanced weapons for self defense, makes some sense. The second age was finished by wind, the third age by fire, and the fourth by water (ice age / flood).
The present 5th age Nahui-Olin or "Sun of Earthquake", began in 3113 BC and ends December 24, 2011. It is said that on this date earth will experience the complete and final destruction of human existence on our home planet - Earth!
The date fits with speculations raised by the brothers McKenna in The Invisible Landscape as “the end of history” as hacked out by computational processing of the Chinese I Ching. None of this however can be verified and it is 'speculation', which fits into similar forms of hypothesis raised by the likes of Nostradamus.
Moving on from the Aztec and on to the Mayan calender, the Mayan calendar is divided into the "Seven Ages of Mankind". The fourth epoch ended in August 1987, note that this age is quite different from the 4th age of the Aztec people, which also ended in August 1987. The end of the Mayan Great Cycle after the completion of the 12th Bak'tum is either the 21st or 23rd December, 2012 depending on whether you use the 584,285 or 584,283 as the correlation coefficient.
For the Mayan calendar it is said that in the fifth age of mankind, humanity will realize its spiritual destiny. In the sixth age, we will realize God within ourselves, and in the seventh age we will become so spiritual that we will be telepathic.
So now we know that the Mayan calendar comes to an end on Sunday, December 23, 2012 and it is said that barely a handful of people survive the catastrophe that ensues. That said I don't see anyone in any great hurry to build space station shaped arc's that are capable of suspending human life in space, while the planet goes through this chaos. Perhaps the Ross Ice Shelf will disappear into the southern oceans and release 80% of the worlds fresh water, in turn disrupting the salt to fresh water balance of the Great Ocean Conveyor Belt and bring about an Ice Age as depicted in the Hollywood hit "The Day After Tomorrow", or perhaps the 17m rise in sea levels will do enough damage to the people who overlooked the fact's raised by the 'early warning signs' depicted in mass media in the form of the Thailand / Indian tsunami's and New Orleans disasters.
For people to be taking this more seriously, perhaps the planet needs to make more serious threats. Incidents like the recent landslides in Brazil are scarcely even known about. Yet peoples lives, homes and family's are being eradicated from the face of our planet on a daily basis. It is actually widely publicized that a mass extinction event is and has been underway for close to a decade now. Perhaps the news just isn't exciting enough or is more than likely seen to be 'against the system' and potentially anarchy in the making.
A link on the NASA science website which I really like on the subject is located here;
http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/10mar_stormwarning.htm
The warnings of a solar storm warning came to head just 12 days before Christmas 2006, with the largest solar storm ever recorded - http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/6189457.stm
The solar maximum arrives in 2012 and we are presently in the solar minimum. When the maximum arrives there will almost certainly be more than 1ft sea level raises and undoubtedly, to make the statement that we will see our planets temperatures raise by a single degree is like saying that you 'could possibly' twist you ankle if you jumped from the statue of liberty... It is already a fact that surface temperatures of our planet are the hottest that they have been in 10,000 years. I don't see that heading from a solar minimum to a solar maximum is going to make the situation any better and quite honestly I would not be surprised if we did not see these temperature changes being more in the region of around 10 degrees centigrade.
Now look, I've gone off on my own ridiculous hypothesis right there and I can't say for certain that the earth's temperature will raise or decrease by even a fraction of a degree, as I am neither qualified in anyway to do so or able to offer any support to the statement. It's just a rough opinion, based on some rough data and a rough guide to what others have spoken of for thousands of years, being confirmed 'roughly' by our modern science.
My daughter will be 7 years old in 2012 and I look forward to long day's spent on the beach swimming and fishing, not being drowned by 100ft tidal waves. In no way do I think that it would be good for me to think like this either as I can tell you that holding on to fears of future events based on any speculation, is inhibiting to your ability to enjoy the present moment. There is no time like the present and after all events could unfold between here and 2012 which mean that many people will not be present for any big event and also that there never actually may be any such 'big event'.
It is quite arrogant to think that we as a species can destroy a planet that has been here for 4.5 billion years, when by comparison our civilization only started finding its feet 12,000 years before today. It is arrogant to think that we are able bring about these 'catastophic' events on our planet with plastics and carbon emissions and it is plain stupid to think that your going to be able to alter the course of an Ice Age if mother nature decides for whatever reason that it is time for another Ice Age.
In the movies all they had to do was take a drive over the border of Mexico and ride it out. That reminds me of the criminal archetype as depicted by Hollywood flicks (From Dusk To Dawn), with the 'getaway plan' after some big heist... Somehow it disarms me to think that the psychology depicted in these American soapbox charades have made that much of an impact on people, that we have actually allowed ourselves to become programmed and react to this "brainwash".
Now I've done enough for your species, I must return to building my rocket to escape from this insane planet of primates. Adieu earthling!

There is global warming, which is happening very fast. By around 2012, the baby boomers will be well up there. The boomers are the largest work force ever born. When they are gone, the infrastructure in the already deteriorating buildings, will crumble because there won't be enough workers for upkeep. All the highways will quickly deteriorate. It will be a lot different world in the near future.

i've got faith that the international won't bring about the year 2012, yet will particularly exchange in many procedures. The mayan calendar does end on the year of 2012, yet i've got not at all heard with regards to the illuminati kingpins. The mayans particularly expected that the international might end on the year 2012, yet i do no longer think of that they have been exceptionally intelligent. properly, you won't be able to blame them to have faith that the international might end on the year 2012. I studied in South usa and had to learn with regards to the mayans, so I could desire to comprehend.

The Mayan calendar ends in Dec. 2012 and they said that would mean the world would end and start a new cycle. If you really want to believe the superstitions of a primitive tribe, you better get ready for it.

2011 turns into 2012 and 2012 turns into 2013. Everything else is speculation.
