I usually start by lighting a stick of Sandalwood or opium incense, assuming a "lotus-posture" and relaxing. Then, I focus my breathing into a steady, controlled rhythm. Next, I try to empty my mind of extraneous influences and focus only on the rhythm of my breaths. Then, depending on the purpose of the meditation, I may try visualizations, or try to silence thought altogether. The immediate benefits are relaxation, relief of stress, muscle-aches, etc. Long-term benefits include, but are not limited to,improved concentration, increased cognizance or "heightened awareness", and the ability to put the mind into a sleep-like state at will.

Grab on to an awesome bible verse and think about it for a while. It helps you to really think about God's promises. This life can be frustrating and uncomfortable at times. That is because we are an alien in a foreign land waiting to go back to our homeland.
