I had a glass of 'house white' in a Chinese last night. It smelt of paraffin and had a funny taste. The waitress showed me the bottle, an Australian called Julian something which I recognised as having had there before and enjoyed. She said they always use it as 'house white'.
I'm no wine buff - a nice Blue Nun'll do me - so do you know why it should taste so foul? And will it do me any harm? (I managed to drink most of it - I was paying for it!)

You should have not drunk it and asked for another serving in a new clean glass which you'd sniff to check it first. If the wine tasted the same, then something's wrong with the wine and you shouldn't pay for it. If not, then the first glass was contaminated by a detergent or some other chemical. In either case you shouldn't have paid for it. As for harming you, only time will tell..

It could have been a really cheap wine or there was something wrong with the cork (happens now and again). Nothing to worry about. Next time taste the wine first and in cases like this send it back and ask for another bottle.

Sounds like the wine was corked or had gone off
I know it's embarrassing but if it happens again, send it back
The restaurant only pay about £3 for a bottle of house wine and can get a replacement

The wine was off: either old, or the bottle had been opened a long time ago. Or the cork didnt shut properly. I had it once, and I almost threw up as it was extremely disgusting. A phonecall to my wine loving inlaws and the mistery was solved.
But don't worry: you wont get sick (otherwise you'd be sick already).

Well all I'll say is that people often feel uncomfortable complaining.The waiters and waiteresses are trained and paid to serve you,the paying customer.Your health comes first before money.You should have asked for a replacement.Its your right.
