I would like to do my cpl ground school while I build up hours (have a ppl 55hours) I have found distant learning schools that offer the course for £1 500.00. (I would rather put this money into flying hours) Is there a way to study yourself and write the exams at the CAA? Surely there are plenty of books out there that you do not need to do the distant learning route??

As a Advanced Ground instructor, I recommend that you obtain Jeppesen's Instrument/Commercial handbook.
Or Bob Gardner's "The Complete Advanced Pilot"
This is an Instrument/ Commercial hand book as well.
Do the instrument rating first , the reason:
According to 14 CFR 61.133...
§ 61.133 Commercial pilot privileges and limitations.
b) Limitations. (1) A person who applies for a commercial pilot certificate with an airplane category or powered-lift category rating and does not hold an instrument rating in the same category and class will be issued a commercial pilot certificate that contains the limitation, “The carriage of passengers for hire in (airplanes) (powered-lifts) on cross-country flights in excess of 50 nautical miles or at night is prohibited.” The limitation may be removed when the person satisfactorily accomplishes the requirements listed in §61.65 of this part for an instrument rating in the same category and class of aircraft listed on the person's commercial pilot certificate.

Note this is FAA regs for the US......YMMV

I did my commercial ground school all at home with the King's DVDs and Gleim. It was all great!! I scored a 91 on the exam.

Yes! You can study aviation in your house with the Cleared for Takeoff kit. It costs + or - 350.00 without the headsets. You can go to www.islagrandeflying.com and look for more information. (That's my school)
