In order of friendliness as perceived by myself. All are quite friendly and highly recommended.
$ cheap, $$ less cheap, $$$ same as USA, $$$$ more than USA
1. $$$ S. Korea - especially friendly to Americans
2. $ Thailand
3. $ Philippines - easy to visit, everyone knows English
4. $$$ Taiwan
5. $ Cambodia
6. $ Indonesia - good people, not all Muslims hate us.
7. $ Myanmar - nice people - dangerous, repressive gov't
8. $ Laos
9. $$ Brunei - off the beaten path but worth visiting
Recommended for history and culture and, in some cases, entertainment, but not as friendly as those listed above.;
$$$ Singapore
$$$$ Japan
$$ China - the big cities aren't so cheap anymore
$$ Macau
$$$ Hong Kong
$ India
$$ Malaysia
I haven't yet been to Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, Bangladesh, Nepal or Bhutan

I, myself is from Malaysia but I'll suggest you to go to Cambodia. It's a very nice place with is definitely worth for a visit. The locals are very helpful and friendly. There are very few crime cases in Cambodia as one of the locals told me that they will look after each other and prevent anyone from doing anything unlawful because they are trying to rebuild their homeland after their tragic past of "Khmer Rouge" Cambodia is just Northern West of Thailand and the best time of year to go there is the week around 25th Dec(Christmas) for the best weather. Hardly sweat because of the cool weather. There are lots of sightseeing areas and the local food tends to be sweeter compare to Thai's cuisine. There are locals who can speak fluent English, Mandarin and etc so communication should not be a problem. Happy holidays~

Laos, even cheaper than Thailand, beautiful countryside, but be careful it is the most bombed country in history,(thanks to the US using it as a practise ground during the Vietnam war) and it is still littered with landmines. Other than that it was good!

no offense to indians, yet i imagine indians have a tendency to stare at each little thing. they're curious by nature. so that they recommend no damage (a minimum of not that i understand of). once you're in distant factors of asia (everywhere in asia).. the overall inhabitants might want to not get many caucasians passing by way of their locale. merely undergo with the stares. a delightful smile will do. accepted asian cultures do not require a wave or hi. as you experienced, it can make it worst because they are going to be questioning if you're anacquaintancee they have forgotten about. it truly is till for sure you're taking position to be in a keep and is enquiring about the products there. then an basic wave and hi earlier you commence asking them questions is ideal. careful about the flashing your flick knife too many times inspite of the indisputable fact that. practice it to the incorrect crew of folk and also you may want to get mugged in retaliation. extra effective to easily practice a stern face and walk away.

Cambodia is very friendly. I also found Laos frinedly and the Indonesian Islands west of Bali. All have a low cost of living in comparison to the west.

You are blind
The Thai are not friendly - they just found out that showing a friendly smiling attitude eases their job: emptying your pockets.
And cheap`??
I live here - and I see nothing ( except for cheap quality clothes and street-food) that is cheaper than in Tokyo.
nothing at all.
actually our living costs here are 50% higher than in Tokyo ( the worlds most expensive capital they say)
