Hi,

I am a new owner of a Maltese/Shitzu dog and have never had one before. I have a question, when can i start bathing it? She's only 6 weeks old. I have found puppy shampoo and some other that kills fleas. Can the fleas one be used or is she still too young for it?

Thanks

He is a baby. Keep him warm and try to make it a nice experience. You need to teach him to behave during this time. This breed will need a lot a grooming. Start brushing on a regular routine. Nice and easy. Hair dryer on low. Short periods of time. Praise him and kiss him a lot. He loves your approval.

You should hold off on the flea shampoo as your puppy is too young and really should not have even been taken from the mother for another couple of weeks or so.
Wait until your puppy is at least 8 weeks old to bath her.

Forget about the flea shampoo, it only kills the one's that are on the pup. (See your vet for Advantage or Revolution, either one will kill the fleas and then take care of the several that are wandering around your house looking to lay eggs) Next, you can't use flea products on a pup that is under 8 weeks of age and NEVER use people products, not even baby shampoo on your dog. A dog's skin is more delicate than ours, it has a lower PH value and human products are simply too harsh.
The groomer's rule for fleas is...for every one that you see on the dog there are a 1000 in the house. Have fun!

I have alway waited till the puppy is 12 weeks old. They have flea colmbs at pet smart . So you use the puppy shampoo then colmb the puppy out.

i also have a puppy it is not recomended to often to wash your dog but i bathed my dog first with 4months and then 1 month later i live on a farm and as you can imagine there is a lot of dirt so i would say if you are not living on a farm twice a year is ok but then always with a mild flea shampoo all vets will recomend that to you if you ask

You cannot use fles killer at this time, the puppy is too young. You may bathe it now, however, how dirty can it possibly be a this age? If you want to get it use to baths, just run some warm water and splash it over the dog, massaging it's legs. It would enjoy the warmth and the massage.

Baby shampoo kills flea's and is safe for your dog right now till she is at least 6 months old I would fill you sink like washing dishes with soapy water and take a wash cloth and wipe her down and dry her do not drench her

Check the bottle for directions. depending on the weight of your dog, you may not be able to use it. If that bottle does not have it on it, find one that does. If your dog is real small you may have to get a flee med (frontline) from your vet. You should be able to go to any vet and get it without a visit. You can start bathing it at any time, just be careful of how much you bath it and what you use on it (flee shampoo) I personally like the oatmeal shampoos and use Frontline on my dogs. I have a 6lb. Chinese Crested Powder Puff (Full coat) and a 10lb. Hairless. When I got them the vet told me to becareful of the flee shampoos on them, it could make them sick.

dang you bought a puppy mill dog with flee's. Ok first flee's hate water. And soap. so first try to put a little flea soap around any area's that flee's can get into to hide like ears, anal, pee pee. Then wash your dog down with regular puppy soap and water. Make sure you bomb your house first. and keep puppy out to air clears. comb with a flee comb. Never use flee collars. They make a flee trap that works really well. it is a light with sticky paper. flee's love it and get trapped on it. Be very sure there are no ticks. if you find a tick get to your vets fast and get antibotics.
Sorry I am so pissed that a puppy has flee's

The lables usually say wait till the dog is 6 months I believe. But you can wash your dog now with your shampoo. I even use cream rinse on mine. Start now so she gets used to it. If she is small, it is much easier to use the kitchen sink. Especially if you have a sprayer. And keep praising her and talking to her while you are, she is going to be nervous at first.
