I know nothing of how Australia would handle it but in the US there is a huge disparity between sentencing of men and women criminals. Women, by and large, receive shorter sentences, quicker parole and are often not incarcerated where men's sentences are longer, slower to parole and are more likely to result in incarceration, all for the same or similar crimes.

Gender has no bearing on criminal sentencing, merely what facility you would be incarcerated in. Sentencing is a case by case determinate.
