I upgraded to Internet Explorer 7 and there are time periods when it will close down completely if you click on any hyper links. Did Microsoft see this coming? And is there a known fix?

Just get Mozilla Firefox. It's performance is far more better than IE7. I've experienced system slow downs with IE7. But if you love IE, degrade to IE6. I just hope that Microsoft will do something about IE7, because Yahoo! works faster with it, in my own observation. But if I were you, choose Mozilla. There are many free & fun add-ons on Firefox.
