In Ontario if you are occupying land (squatting) for fifty years you can consider it yours. I think each state/province will have their own rules about the length of time.

Depends on the country but, in general Europe (including UK), the law says that if you have "taken care" of "something" (house, land etc) for over 12 years, you can officialise its ownership.
You will have to prove that you cared for that place during the 12+ years, ie by bills relating to that place or taxes paid BY YOU for that place.
Another way is, for a place that is NOT claimed to belong by someone (abandonned land/houses), is to pay 12+ years of arrears to the land revenue, then claim ownership.
Explain the situation to a lawyer/solicitor and make your claim.
