i have heard that cats do this sometimes because where they normally would sleep doesn't smell right.
if you are using over-powering room spray, have a brand new piece of furniture, an intimidating animal in the house...
Although it is a poor substitute for a bed, the litter box does at least have a familiar smell for the little tike.
Talk to your vet for more advice.

Have you got other cats? Sometimes for some reason a cat will start to feel intimidated or may be being bullied by other (even neighbourhood) cats and it's litter tray is a safe and private place for her to be.
You need to sort out the issue of why she may be needing to retreat into the box.

Cats will be cats... maybe the litter is cooler or warmer? I found my cat curled up with a packet of carrots this morning! And I often find my middle cat curled up on the toilet lid!! They're just odd critters...

I have 7 cats and most of them will sleep in a box if it is availible, place a carton box next to the litter box and see what happens. it will prob give up the litter box.

doe's your cat use the litter box for it's intended use, it mite be sleeping their because it is a warm place or it could be to try and keep herself cool or maybe it's location could be the reason giving her a sence of security maybe your cat need's a shrink

Maybe it's using the litter in the box to keep cool. Do you live in a really hot climate?
