I thought to myself, "I don't really feel like sleeping." I know, however, that I should in order to make it through the day. What can I do to make myself sleep? Please avoid any "witty" remarks or pointless answers. Honest, helpful answers would be appreciated.

I have actually realized this probably isn't even a question I should've asked, but I do appreciate the answers so far. I, unfortunately, don't react to many medications the same way as many other people, especially with sleep aids. Me taking a sleep aid is about like most people drinking a redbull. They won't fall asleep anytime soon. Milk, on the other hand, doesn't make me tired nor give energy, so I don't know where to go with it. Even though it's unlikely to get a remedy that will work for me, I will still accept the best answer as it would be for most individuals.

I should've also included the facts that I work out rigorously, daily. I am indeed an extreme athlete, a personal trainer, and a track and cross country coach. On top of that, I eat fairly healthy foods, though not a health nut, and do not drink coffee, tea, or soda. My stress levels are hardly mentionable, and I'm incredibly relaxed, just won't sleep.

If it is your regular hour of sleep and you are not sleepy, try to find why. Have you taken too much of coffee, say more than a couple of cups during the evening ? Have your body not subjected to normal movement (and resultant exercise) on that day ? Are you feeling uncomfortable for some reason ? Is there any stress ? If these are not the reasons, then you should be able to sleep without any aid once you lie down and close your eyes.
If the sleeplessness persists, consult your doctor.

Edited as per your latermentioned detail:
If you are not sleepy enough to sleep, and your physical condition and stress levels are as advertised, then don't bother sleeping until you are sleepy. If you are worried that you will not make it through the day, then I assume that means that you fear getting tired during the day. If you have no healthy means of making yourself sleep before you feel tired, then the alternative is to get whatever sleep you can now, and then keep yourself awake during the day until end. If your sleep schedule starts to adversely effect your life and work, then you should see a qualified specialist.

i have it too. cant sleep cause your worried about something. the best thing to do is to find the prob and remedy it. if that don't work take a sleeping pill. i don't take pills of any kind so i don't recommend that. my main suggestion would be to stay away from carbs after 6pm and coffee and or soda. identify what your habits are and change them. exercise or however its spelled. and if all else fails get a bottle of jack and take a 1/2 a shot about 30 min before you wanna pass out, the alcahol will work well with your daily fatigue and you will pass out :)

Perhaps the mental stimulation of staying on the computer is keeping you awake. I have a CD that walks me through relaxing each muscle in my body from the toes upward and I am never awake when it finishes.

Another thought is that your physician could refer you to a sleep study clinic to find out why you are unable to sleep. I wish you luck with your problem.
