The best answer here is from Bashnick. Chilean wines in general can ONLY be differentiated from Australian wines by the fact that they come from different countries. One cannot say that the country of origin has a significant bearing on the quality of wine, that is down to the skill and particular style of the winemaker, the vintage, the grape selection.... etc. Equally, to say that Chilean soil is different from Australian soil is like saying that American pebbles are different from Brazilian pebbles. Both countries are very large and have areas of vine on alluvial soil, gravel, chalk and so on, dependent on the region where the vineyard is situated.

The difference is where it was grown and, depending on the wine, the type of grape used. Australia makes a very nice red wine, but do does Chile. You just need to know which brand to go for.

Thats too general. You need to be more specific. However, I guess Chilean wines do tend to be more subtle in flavour as compared to their aussie counterparts. I prefer chilean wines in general but really good aussie wines are better than really good chilean wines.

Both of them are good 'easy drinking' and 'economic' wine makers compared to french or italian etc. wines. Their names are simplier and made for everyday drinking.Good French etc. wines are good for 'special ocasions' when you want to impress someone but you have to know whats good for yourself 'vallet vs taste'

I'm just having some Merlot right now and it's great :) cheers
