Actually in Greek thought meaning was the "word or definition". Thus in John 1:1 In the beginning was the word and the word was with God and the Word was God.

The Greek word used is λόγος which in the Greek philosophy of the day would have taken it as "the definition".

Christ defines things. God gives meaning. That is why we can talk understand. This is the big problem with evolution, they can not explain meaning, there has to be common "teacher" in order to have meaning at all, it can not come from chaos.
