Yes, they can and are. People, whatever happened to backing up your statements with proof? For the life of me, I can't understand how people can so adamantly deny this truth when it's all around them. Just look in the news or talk with a missionary to Islamic countries.
Here are some links to stories that have been in the news, with excerpts:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/03/21/afghan.christian/ "WASHINGTON (CNN) -- In the days of the Taliban, those promoting Christianity in Afghanistan could be arrested and those converting from Islam could be tortured and publicly executed."
http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52437 "Muslim stabs wife when daughter becomes Christian. 'If children fail, the mother is at fault and will bear the brunt of the blame.'"
http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1139395663359&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull "Austria's foreign minister on Thursday said the European Union would do all it could to save the life of an Afghan man on trial for converting from Islam to Christianity. Conviction could mean death..."
http://www.wnd.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=52004 "Convert from Islam to Christianity killed - Refused to join crowd chanting verses from Quran during lunar eclipse."
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/03/28/christian.convert/index.html "Abdul Rahman had been held by Afghan authorities for his conversion from Islam to Christianity, punishable by death in Afghanistan, which follows Islamic law. Many Muslim clerics in the country called for his death, and said even if he were freed his life would be in danger."
And there are other stories. A simple google search will show you.
EDITED in response to Nextunuthin's statement that Christain missionaries bring "liquor and bad morality and lewdness." This is false - Christians do not promote any of this. The Bible clearly speaks against drunkeness, immorality, and lewdness. The only thing Christians hope to bring to your country is the light of God's truth.

What you have heard is not correct. Have you ever heard that a Muslim who converted to any other religion has been killed anywhere in the world? Answer is no. You better study or do some more investigation in to these things rather than accept what someone says. Read Quran and related Islamic books to know more about these things. Simply if you want to blame Muslims then you are not a good Christian. (may be radical). If you check that who has killed more innocent people in the world from the birth of Jesus (pbuh) or Muhammad (pbuh) then you would understand that Christians (leaders) have killed more than Muslims..

Who told you a lie! It says in the Qur'an that whoever kills one man it is like he has killed the whole of humanity. so please do not believe what someone may tell you. Islam is all about peace, a real Muslim does not kill other people does not matter, race or religion.
Even Prez Bush said islam is a peace. This website may help you :)
Thank you

Islam does nto command to kill converts. Usually the verses related to the so-called HOLY WAR are those which refer to a treaty between the Muslims and idolators of Mecca, upon the breach of which war was declared. That has obviously nothing to do with a person converting to some other religion; it was a war in history and it is done and over with.
In Islam religion is between man and God; no one is responsible for my actions if I am to stand answerable before God for everything I did in this world.
If someone chooses another religion except Islam and someone decides to kill him for that, then it is murder.
Cheers.

The Qur'an clearly states that an apostate Muslim should be killed. Muslims cannot refute that Ayat in the Qur'an without being themselves declared apostate!
Nonetheless, it is understood as the responsibility of the Sharia court or the Country's leader to decide that case of apostacy. Everybody in Islam gets a trial, just like in the west.
In Islam the religion is also the military, the government, the law courts and the personal morality. It is not "just" a beleif system! For that reason apostacy is considered treason. Hadith support this view. Loyalty is survival in a group, especially at war . Ask any gang member in LA!
Treason in all cultures is a capital crime. So for example, if you are a Russian and you defect and help the enemies of Carl Marx and you get caught you'll be charged with treson and shot by a fireing squad.
In order for a Muslim to get executed for leaveing Islam a number of stringent conditions must be met in a court of law. As a result very few people get the HAD crime punishment for leaving Islam which is death. generally it is understood that apostacy means treason against the Islamic state or caliphate.
The conditions that must be met are these:
1. The person must actually speak words saying he rejects Islam and he has to do this 3 X. There have to be witnesses who have credibility.
2. He cannot be prosecuted by anyone except a QADI who is a qualified judge appointed by the state to hear the case.
3. The person must be sane , of sound mind. he cannot be under any coercion . For example if the Christians come with their planes and bomb his villiage with DU and tell him " Help us spread playboy, transfats, liquor and demon-ocracy or else we will shoot you." He won't be held accountable for that if he tricks the Christians by saying "Don't shoot! I beleive in the dead Jewish guy from Rome... er...what's his name?"
We do not have any such concept as "freedom of religion" as was conceived by Jefferson, who was a diest. We are not required to follow Jefferson. We are required to follow Muhammed, Salla alaihi wa-ssallam
Our idea is that religion is a state contract with a group of beleivers be they Jews or Christians or Muslims. You make a contract and you expect it to honored by all the parties. Those different religions have to stay separate and they are not allowed raiding parties into Muslim ereas to get converts. Like all state craft it has self intrest....' kinda like US foreign policy. ONE SIDED.
A Muslim cannot leave Islam under any circumstance without serious consequences. His family will disown him /her. His children will be removed from his custody. He will loose his property and he will not have any legal rights such as a Muslim burial. In some cases will loose citizenship. So most apostate Muslims leave their countries. They come to the US and go to small towns where there are no other Muslims. Once they are outside the jurisdiction of the Islamic state then the Islamic state has not any authority to prosecute them . The same is true of fornicators and homosexuals, so they are all over here too! They cannot be prosecuted in Non Muslim states as well . Muslim law stops at the border. That does not mean their relatives would not pursue them and kill them. In Islam any Muslim can take the law into his own hands if there is clear evidence of treason that led to some disaster. Because it is an act of war against the state and so also against all the other Muslims . We see apostacy as an act of war.
I don't want any missionaries inside Muslim countries because they create divisions in society , civil wars and class divisions. they bring pigs liquor and bad morality and lewdness. They also create ideologic treason and other evils such as corrupting the educational systems . We don't see killing apostates as a good thing. We hope we never ever have to do it! But if it's commanded by Allah in the Qur'an any Muslim can and will obey it as a volitional act. But like everything in Islam it is modified by legal opinion , historical preceedence and local custom. Most Muslims would not see themselves responsible to condemn or execute a fellow Muslim unless they perceived it as a serious threat to the groups survival and a stain on their families honor. Honor is still very important to Muslims in every place where they live. We feel that without honor freedom carries no meaning.

The muslims do this ALL the time!
They threaten to kill you if you don't stop calling them terrorists.
They go around beheading people then say they are peaceful.
They say the bible is corrupted but use it to support muhammad.
They say allah cares for the Jews, but goes killing Jews.
Nothing makes sense in islam. Have you not awakened yet?
The fault does not lie with America. The fault lies with Islam. America did NOT antagonise any country. The muslims simply just want America obliterated. Period.

Muslims respect Christians as being "people of the book." Hence, they consider their faith a religion of peace.
Now ask yourself this before you start throwing stones at another person's faith: Can a child be stoned to death by his parents if he talks back, according to the Bible?
The answer is yes.
And yet Christians dare to call their faith a religion of love.
Ironic, isn't it?

The short answer is Yes, which I found out to my horror early in my five year sojourn in Saudi Arabia. The Qur'an does not mandate this; in fact, it prohibits it (2:256). But that does not stop Muslims from doing it.
