When the soldier is in the US, they have $250,000 life insurance policy. When they are deployed to a combat zone, it goes up to $400,000 at the same monthly premium as the original policy. Who gets that money depends on who the soldier has listed as the beneficiaries of the policy. There are also other gratuities and benefits that are there, but I'm not sure how much they amount to.

SE - please don't post where your soldier is located online. OPSEC (operational security) is there to protect them. There have been documented cases where unit locations and troop movements where posted online, and the Iraqi insurgents used that information to attack and kill the soldiers. Please be careful what you post, for your son-in-law's sake.

All soldiers are required to have life insurance. When I was in back in the late '90s, we were covered for $100,000 or $200,000 - which ever you choose to pay for. It was $9 or $18 per month. I don't know what the coverage is now.

My daughter just recently married and both are in the Army. He just got deployed to Al Taji on Dec. 31, 2006 and we talked about the "what if" situation as he is an explosive device expert. She said his family would get $250,000 and she would get the same amount. But after going to the following websites:

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/l/blcasualty.htm
http://usmilitary.about.com/library/milinfo/casualty/blgratuity.htm

I am sure they are paying extra for beyond the standard allowance of $100,000.

The current SGLI is $400,000, plus 3 months pay, plus $15,000 gratuity. If the spouse doesn't remarry she's entitled to survivor benefit for the rest of her life, the children get survivor benefit till they turn 18.

yes they are. usually soldiers hand over back pay and any other benefits over to their spouse. and as for kids, they are automatically covered under the soldiers life insurance provider.

when I was in in the early 90's we had life insurance. same as the late 90's person. also if you are killed in action your family is entitled to surviors benefits. this includes medical and monetary compensation. then again you get the same thing in the civilian world to, it's called social security survivor benefits.
