Do what your vet recommends. For heaven's sake if you sprained YOUR ankle would you try to treat it yourself?

R - If your dog sprains it's ankle stop all movement as soon as you possibly can. Never let it try to walk or stand on an injured limb. Kennel is up. Wal-Mart sells wire kennels.

I - Retrieve a bag of ice, frozen peas or a cold compress for your pet.

C - Apply it directly to the ankle, using an ACE bandage (those stretchy, elastic bandages) to secure the ice. This will create compression over the injury site and reduce swelling. Try to keep the dog from removing it, you can also get a wrap bandage like the vets use at a drug store, they adhere to themselves, and are far harder for your pet to remove.

E - Finally, elevate your pet's foot above heart by lying down and propping your ankle up on some pillows. You will have to do this when he/she is out of the kennel, simply love on your pet to keep them still.

Vets recommend your pet stays off of it's foot for a few days if possible and your injury should heal nicely. Following R.I.C.E. relieves pain, limits swelling, speeds healing, and protects the injured area. Knowing this simple formula is something you will use time and time again, whether for yourself or your pets. So just remember: it’s as easy as R.I.C.E.

When my dog sprained her leg I didn't know so I rushed her to the emergency vet. They did x-rays to make sure there was no fracture or sprain. She just never tried to walk on her leg when her leg was sprained she just walked around on 3 legs. So I freaked out when I try to exam her leg and she nipped at me.

Anyways they gave me two types of medicine. One was a simple pain killer and another one was Metacam an anti-inflammatory to help her leg go down. I tried to make sure she did as little walking as possible. I will take her outside to do her business and carry her back in (as well as down). The meds made her groggy as well so that helped a lot to keep her away from walking. Eventually the sprain went away and she went back to running around; however, she kept injuring herself so I had to massage the leg and she was back on her leg (try to keep a puppy from running around).

That's what I did. Good Luck.

If you have not make sure your vet does the x-rays to make sure it is not broken or is not something else. Your vet will also prescribe a pain med (more likely Rimadyl). When a dog injures part of his leg he will not walk on it. So with out knowing what part of the leg is injured it is hard to tell you. Unless it is broken I would not wrap it. Try to keep his movement to a minimum. At any sign of swelling or more pain contact your vet immediately!
