It has just over 123K miles on it and here recently i have had a problem shifting from 1st to 2nd. It wants to go into 4th and then i have to either search harder for 2nd and if can't find it go into 3rd. Clutch feels fine. Tonight something bad happened. Was still not finding 2nd but also had to force into 1st. After a few aggravating moments trying to get into 1st and then find 2nd i started to smell something, a hot rubber like smell. Tranny fluid maybe? I pulled it over and there it sits. Someone last week told me after driving it that they thought it was a linkage issue and not a tranny problem. Any idea what could have happened tonight and what the problem is. No leaks under the car that I could find.

If the transmission will stay in gear both under acceleration and deceleration in all gears, in other words "not POP OUT" of gear, and you are just having to "hunt" for your gear positions, you have a worn out "shift coupler". The only problem will be finding an original part. It is a discontinued part but has been replaced by part number 75 76 416. Should run you between $50 and $60. The biggest problem will be finding the coupler pin. Part numbers 83 75 172 & 83 35 002, and you need both pieces. It is special and cannot be substituted by "any old thing that will fit". If you have a problem finding one drop me a note, I stock them. Hope this helps you out, Al

Unfortunately Saab's manual transmissions have a reputation for fragility, and rarely last beyond 150K miles before rebuild, particularly if the fluid is not changed regularly.

There's a chance that your Manual shift joint has come apart. This is a very common problem on the 9000 series. The rubber portion of the Shift joint begins to separated causing the shifter to feel as though there is no gate or no real shift pattern. Replacement of the Manual shift joint may be the repair.

I doubt its the linkage burning.....But I would bet its the linkage failing, probably needs to be replaced and what your smelling might well be the tranny, if the linkage isn't get the gears fast enough you might be burning your syncros out(they match the gears with engine speed). So I would have it checked out, linkage is pretty cheap but if you burn up those syncros then your talking tranny rebuild.

It's probably just worn linkage, older volkswagens are known for the same problem. The burning rubber smell may just be part of the linkage resting on the exhaust pipe.
