I have already had the head gaskets replaced and that did cost a pretty penny.

My wife drove a 1993 Ford Probe GT for about a year. All this car needed was a new paint job when we bought it...we thought.

Have you seen the movie with Tom Hanks called the "Money Pit"? That movie comes to mind when I think back on her old car. It was fun to drive but was always in need of repair.

Parts are VERY EXPENSIVE because they are hard to find. Parts stores, junk yards, and eBay were the only places to find parts.

The aggravation and worrying about my wife getting stranded was my final decision to junk our '93 Ford Probe GT. Good luck if you decide to keep yours...

Firstly, about the lights, the tail lights and instrument panel are on the same fuse in a probe so you probably wanna check that... The oil leak is probably your valve cover gasket(s), almost every probe has this problem at some point, on a 4-cylinder it's pretty easy to fix yourself (about an hour) but on a V-6 it's far more involved since the intake manifold has to come off to access the rear cover. As far as it being worth a new trans, all a matter of opinion, depends how long you'd plan on keeping it, cost, blah blah blah... I'd check out forum sites and see how much you could get one for there (ie. http://forums.probetalk.com), you may be able to find someone parting out a car near you and potentially someone that'll install it for cheaper than a shop would charge!

That value is unquestionably functional. yet you're taking a bounce of religion getting used engine/transmissions. right this is why: a million. Mechanic probable have been given them from a community salvage backyard and relatively has no thought what number miles are on them. 2. there's no way which you will appreciate how long the engine/trans have been sitting interior the open - getting rained on and rusted. even once you have become rebuilds (which you sometimes can get for plenty older engines than this) who's to assert that it replaced into precise rebuilt? 3. No mechanic of their precise recommendations is going to furnish you a guaranty for greater effective than a month in this. you will probable get him to repair something interior the 30 days if he surely put in something incorrect (like lacking hooking up some wiring). yet do no longer assume something mechanical getting repaired. 4. as quickly as you replace the drivetrain in a motor vehicle, that's normally such as you have an entire diverse motor vehicle. There could properly be noises and rattles and squeaks that weren't there till now. So this motor vehicle you like will possibly no longer even warrant your loving it in a while. whether you have the money sitting around, you ought to evaluate you ought to certainly pay the $2300 - have the two the engine or the trans die in 3 months and be gazing yet another extensive restoration bill or getting yet another motor vehicle at that component. Your mechanic is likewise precise approximately changing the timing belt, water pump and rear important seal collectively as that's all aside. If i replaced into your massive brother, i might say you ought to inspect something else to stress.

IF you have a leak you should get that fixed first. Since it's an American car it wont coast very much. Since gas is the way it is I would have to keep it and stick a new transmission in it. It will be worth it in the long run.

Find out what the leak problem is first and how much to fix. If you can fix the leak, the electrical problem and the transmission fixed at the same time, then do it.

Don't sink ANY more money in it. For 1 thing, if you try to sell it, you'll never get that money back and if you keep it, it's only a matter of time before something else needs repair or replacement. Parts for it are getting harder to find and more expensive.

My son has an older Probe too...nice little car! He has a lot of money tied up in his..but he doesn't have to pay anyone to work on it either...between him and my husband ...they take care of everything..I guess it depends on how much work it needs...how much you'll have to pay someone to fix it...and how much you like the car!
