whatever you can safely handle and practice with. dont think that buying a gun and sticking it in the closet will save your life. Reminds me of these horror flicks were panicked victims are trying to remember how to load "dad's" gun. Everyone is right a shot gun is the best for novices. low chance of pass thru damage or bystander hits. The cocking sound of a pump action is the only sound deterent that really gets bad guys attention most have heard it from the gun turrets of the prison and know to hit the ground when the sound is heard. Load with heavy bird shot in the chamber maybe a turkey load and second round then heavier loads with the final shot a slug ( hit the car as they flee ) the reason for the bird shot is your first incounter will be close up and the bird shot will still be in a tight pattern like a 2 inch wide bullet. kinetic energy will be about the same as a slug but not penetrate. a slug will go thru a person a wall a car door and the other car door...if an intruder is standing against the bedroom wall and you slug him it will go thru and maybe hit your kids in the next room keep extra rounds mounted to the stock or receiver. ( watch terminator II see the end with Linda Hamilton using the Rem 870 with folding stock )

Hands down, a 12 gauge loaded with buckshot or slugs. Some people suggest a side-by-side double-barreled shotgun. This allows for two quick shots, which is 99% of the time all you'll ever need. You could even have buckshot in one barrel, and a slug in the other, for maximum power.
A 12-gauge barrel is roughly a .72 caliber gun, firing at least a full ounce of lead at around 1200 fps. No handgun can match that kind of power. The best part is, the shotgun is less likely to over-penetrate interior walls when loaded with buckshot or lighter birdshot.
The shotgun is the best of both worlds, and the best close range one-shot stopper. Best of all, most shotguns are fairly inexpensive, ranging from $100 for a single-shot break-action to $400 for a solid home-defense shotgun with a 7-round magazine.

Everyone needs to be equipped to defend their home. Criminals can do a lot of rape, pillage, plunder and escape in the 20 minutes it takes for the police to show up. Criminals are like wolves that only attack sheep.
My setup is simple - An alarm system, clearly marked on all windows, followed up by two large dogs. Those two things buy me the time I need to grab and load my 357 magnum that is loaded with 125 grain jacketed hollow points in 38 special +P. Those bullets penetrate only 8", mushroom perfectly and double their diameter. I pity the fool(s) that try to break into my place.
Whatever you get, learn gun safety and learn how to shoot. Shoot often at the range to develop confidence with your weapon of choice. Don't be a sheep. Be a sheepdog.

A sawed-off 10 gauge double loaded with rock salt. LOL!
Seriously dude, get an alarm system and a good watch dog. If you can do so legally get a quality handgun you are competent with and know when to use it. Be careful of overpenetration. Dry wall doesn't stop bullets very well and a loved one could be sleeping in the next room.
Best,
H

A dead bolt would be a good start, but if the scum bag actually get in, a sawed off 12 gauge should do the trick.

KNOWLEDGE... you need to know...if you don't know he is there how can you stop him and if you don't know how to use your weapon what good will it do you?
so get in the Know...and get a gun(and if you don't come from a hunting family{or one that knows firearms}) and get some training on how to use it. and a shotgun is not always best a 9mm is just as good and in many ways better if you know how to use it.

Good door locks and my Doberman.
I'm 100% in favor of the right to bear arms, but I take solid measures to prevent the need for them.

A twelve gauge shotgun or .45 cal pistol. Both will stop them "dead" in their tracks.
