the first americans were the British colonies.

They were the first recorded american citizens.

All other people living in America prior to the British colony were not called americans.

I don't understand, the indigenous people of this country were the first ones here that's why we call them native Americans. This country was colonized by the British though then every one else just showed up.

Probably tribes that settled around Tierra del Fuego, Ecuador and Mexico over 10 000 years ago. It's unclear at this point who exactly was first.
