Sounds to me the teacher has gone WAY overboard! My sons only had 15 to 20 minutes of homework in the third grade (now they are in 4th and 6th). I think the schools now are trying to push the kids way to hard AND expect the parents to teach them what they don't have time for in school because of all the "extras" they do. (like field trips, plays, projects..etc.) I think you should have a talk with the teacher and let her know how your daughter is getting burnt out and overwhelmed because the next thing is hating school and giving up because of all the work. ps. don't you love all the projects you have to do at the "last minute"? and buy the stuff for it?

I teach 5th Grade, and I'd say that something like 30 minutes on average would be acceptable. Some days of course will be heavier, some lighter. I think you should set a time to speak with the teacher and see what's going on. Is all of this homework? Or, is there time to do the work in school and it's just not getting done? Ask for suggestions on how to help your daughter work better. The teacher may not be aware of how long its taking to do the work. When you speak to the teacher, be sure to communicate that you are both on the same side; be positive in your approach and you'll have a good conversation and probably accomplish more.
Good luck.

I guess it all depends on the teacher. I can remember having teachers who were book report happy and then the next year I would have less homework with one teacher even though I was older. If she is really truly stressed and feels like she can't handle it I would suggest calling for a conference with the teacher. You don't have to try to dictate to her how to handle her class but explain to her that you daughter is feeling stressed and see if she would consider loosening up or at least she can gain a little perspective into how you as parents and students feel on the other end. If the teacher is just stubborn just look at it this way, the summer sure will feel better than ever and your daughter will be on smart cookie! Although I'm sure she already is. Good luck and God Bless:)

In first grade I had one spelling and one math sheet a night and they both usually took me about 10 minutes each. My younger sister had about the same amount. If the homework become obsessive and a problem then I would contact your child's teacher because there is no reason a first grader should have an hour of homework each night.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and gets 1 math sheet (20 problems) most every night, a spelling word exercise (use each word in a creative sentance, write each word 3X each etc), another exercise depending on the day and 20 minutes of reading. To be honest, she got more in 2nd grade.
Kids this age should read for at least 20 minutes every night (reading is the root to learning). 15 minutes of homework like stated above is not nearly enough. My kids had more then 15 minutes in Kindergarten.

It may be in your best interest to find out if all the other students are getting the same amount of work. It may be that your child is not getting all her work done during the given amount of time. Third graders should be doing around 30-45 minutes of homework per night. The reading is the most important. If she is struggling with reading then you need to talk with the teacher.

I also have a third grader, and luckily he doesn't have that much. But in first grade and kinder garden he was loaded down like that. I know how you feel. Tell her teacher shes getting stressed and see if she ll lighten the load a bit. I guess it all depends on the teacher. Some go a bit crazy with the work because they want the home/ school cooperation, but it can easily turn into the problem your having..

If she is feeling overwhelmed, then make a policy with her saying that she can't spend more than 2 hours on her homework. If her teacher throughs a fit, schedule a meeting with him/her, and tell him how she is feeling. Or the other outlook...
Is she not finishing her work at school? Maybe that's why she has so much homework.

My daughter has a math page everynight, she has to write in a journal everynight the teacher picks the topic and she has to read for 30 minutes everynight also. My 5th grader gets about 2 hours of homework everynight I think that is way too much.

Homework is supposed to be approx. 10 mins per year of school each night. So a 3rd grader should have about 30-40 mins of homework each night.
