i put my hands behind my head to strech and when i did i felt a sharp pain in the base of my neck. now it hurts all the way down in to my shoulders and in my uper chest and up right behind my ear when ever i turn my head. i went to the er but they said it could be about 3 to 4 hours just to get back to see a dr because they were full of people with the that flu cold mix thing going around so i went home. Any clue on how i can stop the pain at home? i have put a heating pad even took some advil but nothing is stopping the pain.

It feels like something is broken but i know that can't be it that's how i know it's a pinched nerve for all those who would ask well how do u know it's a pinched nerve

Well, if the heating pad is giving you no relief you must have done a really bad job on your neck.
Yowch, I know how painful it can be.
I had a pinched nerve recently and it lasted over a month. There isnt really a lot a doctor can do for a pinched nerve. A chiropractor can help relieve it though.
I had to have 3 sessions with a chiropractor before I felt any relief.
By the way, dont bother with a physiotherapist. I went to one out of sheer desperation, and all he did was give me stretching exercises that did NOTHING!
Try ringing your local chiropractor and explaining the situation. They usually reserve some appointments for emergency consultations.
It really does sound like a pinched nerve. I feel really sorry for you. They can be extremely painful. Dont be surprised if you experience some numbness too.
If you are really worried go back to the hospital. As they say, better safe than sorry. But persevere with the heat pad and try some Dencorub/Deep Heat (that stinky stuff athletes rub on their muscles)
All the best - hope you get some relief.

If it is a pinched nerve there is not a whole lot that can make the pain go away. Nerve pain is hard to control. But heat and antiinflammitories (ibuprofen) will help some. You do need to get it checked out and don't just settle for an x-ray. I had a pinched nerve in my neck in October, x-ray showed nothing. I couldn't get comfortable and the pain was horrible. The key with mine was I had numbness in my fingers and top of my arm. I had a large bulging disc and surgery took care of it.

If the ER is full, why dont you make an appointment to see a massage therapist? they can do some manual traction on the cervical area and relieve some of the pain you have for now. But you do have to see a Dr. because it could something more serious. IF is not a nerve,it could be muscles spasm, or trigger points that radiates, try making an appointment for a therapeutic massage.
Hope you feel better good luck ^i^♥♥

I know exactly what you are going through.....tomorrow go to the clinic in your area. I know, one night of hell...but then you don't have to wait in the er....maybe the doc will prescribe some muscle relaxers for you....If the heat pad doesn't help, and the advil, try soaking in a hot tub, or let the shower pound on it.....really it should be moist heat....I know, I go through this all the time....and it hurts!!!
